Ahoy! Life got busy there and I didn't have any time for toy soldiers. But I'm back and painting away like a... Well like a man who paints a lot I guess? I've made some progress on my US command post. It's coming along nicely and I reckon it'll be done over the weekend. I've also had a few reinforcements arrive from Iron Clad Games and I'm pretty excited to paint them up!! Anyway on with the pics!

Love your command post Are the covers on the coal hoppers hinged in the middle for opening?

It doesn't seem so, maybe they've got a snap-on kind of lid?

I'd add 3 short lengths of styrene rod 1mm diameter or less along the long inner edge of the hatch to represent hinges. It would open inward toward the stack.

I haven't really thought about how they open, my first goal was to get a covered hopper. Thinking about and reading your comments I'm thinking of having them open in two ways: two part - opening out from the middle, and one top opening along its length towards the nearest track. I'll probably knock up both kinds and see which one looks best. For hinges I might just glue a price of brass rod there. A little handle might be good too. I wonder if I could fit a figure with a shovel in there.... Thanks for the ideas and comments everyone!

Another possibility is an "extended range" steam tank: Add vertical sideboards to the coal bunker to increase coal capacity. Every good old boy with a pickup truck knows this trick.
Kinda the opposite of putting a lid on it.

Hello! I've made some progress on the artillery tanks. The weathering is done and now I'll just have to varnish and add transfers. The crew I'll finish later, after the command post infantry. I probably won't do any more of these. I had a hell of a time putting them together and I just don't like them. I mean they look nice but I don't like them knowing how much trouble they were. Anyway here are some pics pre gloss varnish.

They do look good. Can't remember if I had trouble with mine or not

1) The top pieces on mine are too wide to fit between the tracks and need to have at least 0.5mm filed off each side, up to just above track level. 2) The gun mounts when glued to the barrel are slightly wider than the base that assembly needs to be glued to. Because the mounting pieces are narrow there's not much contact with the base so I widened the base with strips of styrene.

Hey bilko991 ref your "I probably won't do any more of these. I had a hell of a time putting them together and I just don't like them. I mean they look nice but I don't like them knowing how much trouble they were. " Try the resin case Conqueror mobile artillery figures. Price is competitive and they can either be used as 6" per the rule book or my alternative 8" rules (per Conqueror and my TO&E for their figures). No difficult assembly required and for a small addition you can put an ammo trailer on one for that all important additional firepower.
