The French may be heading for Mexico and I could see them getting seriously involved in Texas when they get cut off from the US and declare their independence (which I will keep from Ernie's timeline). So, I hope some interesting things will be happening! Nope. This is where I get irrationally violent. I can understand Texas self administrating as a wartime extingency, but break away from the US? Nope. Be branded as traitors to the Republic and the human race. Teddy would lead another contingent of Rough Riders to put paid vile seccessionists. And woe to the European power that tries to take advantage. Well, the whole Texas issue is a tricky one. The Martian drive through the Great Plains to the Mississippi will leave Texas as an enormous salient in the American lines. The Mississippi line from the Gulf to the Great Lakes is about 1,500 miles once you add in all the twists and turns of the river. If we include the Texas Salient that will DOUBLE! The Americans will not have the forces to defend such a line. Keep in mind that the Western Front in France and Belgium in WWI was a mere 400 miles long. Add in the fact that at this point in history Texas doesn't really matter much. It's oil industry is in its infancy and there is no other industry there at all. The only other thing Texas produces is beef. As a result, Texas will be short-changed on military resources and it is inevitable that the Texans will resent it. They will demand troops and guns and tanks and they won't get much of anything. With no industry they will have trouble supplying troops of their own. And then when they get cut off from the rest of the US they will be in real trouble. Accepting French aid may be their only hope of survival. The Texans have always been very independently minded and with plenty of Civil War veterans still around an independence movement is not out of the question.

In another discussion, I highlighted three strategic blindspots Martians face: the wheel, open water, and air power. The Mississippi and Memphis line halted the Martian advance, at least for a while. With Texas, their supply lines run through the Gulf, making them neigh impervious. Add in the open plains and fast moving vehicles, Texas has a good chance of mounting a mobile defense.
I see the Martians mostly ignoring Texas as they prosecute the Mississippi line. It is an irritant, but knocking out the industrial centers in the East would be higher priority. Realistically, that's the only reason Texas endures. I imagine there is much movement of troops and supplies through the Louisiana swamps.

Interesting discussion. I've tried to add some more value to Texas with the various units I stated around the old AD TX models and its draw of Martian resources to the Pecos area. Theres also some importance with the support of Lawrence of AZ and Pedos Mexican 'guerilla' being a thorn in the Martians rear (do they have one??). The Martians are Trying to ignore TX - without much success due to the Texian abilitiy to shift forces and jump any major Martian thrusts. I think that with riverine and naval support, Texas could survive even if much reduced in area. Additional French units would only add to the survival. But the point is valid indeed; the East is the goal, the distruction of all those places of humanity that resist and importantly produce the prey-that-stings weapons. One day the Martians hope to start taking out major shipyards - all the more to stop the humans resist.

Thanks very much! Reviews really help a lot! I am working on it, but only up to chapter 2, I'm afraid The uncertainty about what was happening with Alien Dungeon forced me to hold off for a number of months before starting the second book. But I'm rolling now. Perhaps a few sample chapters can be posted here once I'm farther along.

That's a good question! If sales justify it I could write another. But for this year Winged Hussar Publishing is going to publish another of my books (in addition to the 2nd Martian book) "Across the Great Rift", a rip-snorting (always wanted to use that word!) SF adventure set in the far future.

Well thanks very much! Being an author is pretty cool, too I know I will never make much money from this, but being able to create something which brings some small pleasure to other people's lives is a very good feeling. I like creating things! I started writing about 18 years ago. It was fan fiction set in David Weber's Honor Harrington universe. From there I started writing my own original stories, but aside from one short story published by Baen Books, I didn't have any luck selling my novels. I had a couple of very near misses, but no hits. So I went back to writing fan fiction again. This time in Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan universe. (If you haven't read any Bujold, I strongly recommend her. She is IMO the best SF&F writer in the business today--she's also won more Hugo awards than any other writer.) But when I started producing paper models for Ernie's All Quiet game I proposed writing some books set in that setting and Ernie told me to go ahead. By one of those odd coincidences that happen, Vincent Rospond, owner of Winged Hussar Publishing asked Ernie if he would be interested in having some stories written in the All Quiet world? (Vincent had once been the chief editor for Games Workshop's Black Library Series.) Ernie just pointed him in my direction and the rest is history If you are interested in any of my other novels, I have self-published three of them and they are all available from Amazon. They are: "War among the Ruins" (SF), "Pathfinder" (SF), and "Fires of Memory" (Fantasy).

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks very much! I'll thank you even more if you'll take a moment and post a review on Amazon. It doesn't have to be long or fancy but I'd really appreciate it. Apparently the number of reviews a book gets determines how aggressively Amazon advertises it.

Sorry if I sound like a sycophant, Scott, but I can't gen enough of your work; either your models or your writing. You have inspired this decrepit old cold warrior to look at 3D builder tutorials, to learn Pepakura to make my own paper models, and I have designs to write some of my own Great Martian War novel. I am 3/4 through with INVASION and so far my opinion is *****
With Teddy Roosevelt at the helm of the US, and with Mexico and the rest of Central and South America in Disarray, I see the Post Martian Future like this:
The US consists of States and Territories that go all the way south to Columbia. State sovereignty will become more like it was before the Civil war, and several native american tribes will be nations not reservations. The US will include Cuba, Guam and the Philippines as US territory. The Senate and House of Representatives would each need small stadiums in which to meet. Great Britain, Japan and other industrial powers will likewise take over territory that has been devastated and depopulated. While this would not be appealing to current standards of political correctness, a good deal of the "third world" was better off under colonial rule.
Russia of the Tzars will not be able to stand up to the Martians. The European powers will need to march east while Japan marches west. Japan will end up with a large portion of Siberia and China as Europe must needs look south to Africa
The Martians will find Africa a horrible expedition, as the resident Prey that Stings will be fortified with Tanks and Guns from factories from Europe, Japan and the US.
The world will gradually but solidly unify as the colonial powers inexorably reach the conclusion that there is no "Red and Yellow and Black and White and Brown." It will be impossible to see any race differences besides "Human" and Martian.
Tell a Texian that he or she is not a Texian, and you will get your a$$ kicked. Tell a Texian that he or she is not and American and you will get it double.

Hi all.
It appears that I cannot purchase the book except in kindle format. Did the print run run out or is it just because Amazon hates Australia?
[edit]
Scratch that. Logging in via US allows me to by the paper back. SO yes it does hate australia
