Hey all, thought it might be fun to make a speculation/hopes thread for the upcoming edition after last night's awesome interview with the new owners if anyone was interested. I've seen so many good ideas bounced around on here and facebook etc, I thought it would be nice to have them all in one place.
A few things that I thought would be interesting/excited for.
*The implementation of clans/etc It was mentioned quite a few times in the interview that there is serious thought being given to/might be a clan system for the Martians as well as I believe the human factions, as well as army wide special rules, like Industrial Might. Having different Martian houses with their own strategies and buffs would be incredible. As a Warhammer 40k Ork collector (We have similar rules for our different clans such as the Goffs and Speed Freeks, etc both of which share a lot of models but are played very differently) it allows for the same faction to be played in a variety of fun and different ways instead of, "How fast can the Martians charge the human lines".
*New Martian Models/redesign I'm really curious to see in what way they will be taking the martians for second edition. After falling in love with the aesthetic of the current models, (A bit of a Jeff Wayne/2005 hybrid) which are alien of course, but not as much or extreme as other takes on the iconic war machines from the red planet.
*Aircraft! Really excited for this one. As a huge, huge War of the Worlds Goliath fan, it would be awesome taking on the Martians from the skies. Of course, they probably won't be as advanced as the ones from the movie (Heat Ray cannon on the Red Baron's triplane anyone?) it's still a fantastic concept and I really can't wait to see what they do with it.
What are everyone's hopes or ideas that might become reality for the new edition? Really curious to hear.

1) I’m looking forward to better/ clearer rule set.
2) honestly I’m kind of happy with my current collection of miniatures and terrain. I hate to think about replacing all my tripods.

No need to replace your tripods. With the idea of different Martian clans (something I explore in my books) there is no reason why different clans might not use tripods that look significantly different. Since the focus of the new expansion seems to be Europe with the Germans and all, the new tripods are the ones used by the clans facing them. The old tripods are the ones used by the clans in North America.
Alternately, this war could last for a long time. Maybe the old model tripods are exactly that: older models. New improved models start being produced, but the old ones could remain in use for quite a while.

I thought it would be really rad say for the new starter box idea they're kicking around to have some German units vs a different tripod clan and their units. Perhaps one clan prefers the heavy use of drones and loboton troopers instead of mixed with their tripods having command and control gubinz on their hoods, or perhaps another clan has heavier, longer range firepower with rules to benefit them. I really like the idea of perhaps the og ones would be as you said, veterans or who knows maybe even status symbols but not as extreme as say, the Veteran tripods.

Lots of cool ideas... I love the idea of martian clans too... thinking like a business person who is selling the game, I wouldnt want to say old versions are one clan and new are a different one, because I couldnt sell those old models... They need to be able to sell all clans they come up with... give them a different paint scheme or whatever... sure WE as old fans can say our old models are the xyz clan that invaded the USA and that will be cool, but new owners wont make that a rule because it cuts off their own sales. One idea I floated by Dave was the Flames of War model of having 'Early-War', 'Mid-War', and 'Late-War' periods with different equipment available for each period. We start off with the old-style tripods and the simple steam tanks and as the war progresses more and more advanced equipment shows up on both sides. I'm not sure what he thought of that, but maybe we'll find out

Gregg Yeah, I think that's a really good point. Perhaps the martians who landed in the areas we've seen, (US, Egypt, etc) were all from one house, and perhaps the ones that landed in Germany, or maybe Russia will be from a different house with a different look. But no, I agree 100% that one shouldn't replace the other, heck maybe make both of them available in the new box. Make a new head piece or something.

FWIW:
One thing that the new owners should avoid is the GamesWorkshop model of obsoleting and ruling out everything earlier when new stuff is introduced. It seems to be an effective marketing approach for GW, but is pretty disgusting to those who bought into a dead-ended line.
One could argue that the Martians, having had lots of time to work the problem, have fielded the highly optimized tripods that they are using. Minor mission-related mods or could be used to differentiate the newer items. They might even consider "retro-fit" heads that could be used to replace the existing ones and use the same legs and bases.
Popping the old heads off and using magnets to attach the new ones could add a new way to growing the line.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

I am more interested in new scenarios and expansion books rather than a 2nd edition rulebook. I tidied up rulebook and clear quick play sheets would be useful as well as cards for units.

Games workshop did the opposite with Age of Sigmar... they gave warscrolls for every model they ever made... some like my beloved tomb kings are no longer produced and are not "supported" with "updated point balancing" but they do have scrolls.

I for one would certainly be interested in new scenarios. My friend bought me a copy of the rulebook (after going through the online pdf way too many times) and one of my favorite parts were the scenarios in the back, especially the one with the cylinder and the storming of the redoubt. Really interested to see what ideas they'll come up with!

I have to agree with Q - expansion books with new scenarios is preferred. Adding French & German to the mix should certainly get its own expansion book with Old Glory figures filling the troop slots. As far as scenarios, this forum has seen a bunch of other locations for fighting and I have given examples of Egypt/North Africa, India, and China as well. For the USA audience, the Canada/USA/Mexico areas are easy to envision - but, marketing to the world will require a more open format, especially for the British & Europe markets. Just as I've noted both religious armies and state militia, the various Europe powers could have 'state militia' as well.

Expansion books are a great way to expand the appeal of the AQMF line. This is especially true if they can written by or in cooperation with people from the areas involved. There is nothing that adds authenticity as well as that can. If the books can reference sources for appropriate miniatures until the new owners get their lines cranked up, it can probably help bridge their startup.
I know there are going to be "rights in property" and international issues, but it may be worth it.

Revised rules with a "living" PDF instead of eratta. There should also be provision for "unofficial" rules, e.g. house rules that have the imprimatur of officialdom. Condensed charts in a print-friendly PDF format. This would include "carts" of unit stats that could be printed and laminated by players.
While I love the early-middle-late period idea, the execution is important. I put on a Flames of War game event set in North Africa, explicitly saying that Mid-War equipment used in Africa was expected. Naturally, some german players brought Panthers and almost all the German players brought Tigers. In addition to early, early-middle, middle, late-middle and late time periods, I'd include Low, medium high and "desperate" intensity levels. I would likewise incorporate the "limited" rubric. Some units you can only have one of per each 250/500/750/1000 overall points.
I mwould like to see more scenario "books" and also a section for Fan Fiction.

Well, I would actually go back and completely re-think Command Points and the turn structure. I am not satisfied with IGOUGO in this game, the double movement phase elements and Initiative. The game sometimes feels more like an exercise in dice rolling than a thought provoking game than I would like. What would I do differently? That is not as clear, but I would play around with either an alternating activation method OR an Command Point Bid Activation system. Not exactly sure what, but I am not the one who needs to design and sell it. I would also work on some smaller scale intro scenarios with some lighter units from both sides like lobos, cavalry, etc. That allows an "entry" level of play that does not exist. I feel like one of the games great strengths is scenario play.
