Sadly he (like most of the British Army--even Churchill) was in South Africa, fighting the Boers during the first invasion. But I suppose I could throw in some minor character who was in England at the time.

Yes, I'm in the limited flashbacks camp - do the Major justice with a full series of volumes if you can. And yes, a Lt. Bridges surviving the original invasion would be cool. One of the many crowded in the church as the virus kills the invaders...

Am now reading book 3 and just started it. One early skirmish brought up a question.
Question: Have the prey creatures not thought of booby-trapping downed or abandoned tripods to discourage Martian salvage attempts? An 8 inch shell hidden inside the wreckage with an antitamper fuse would be jolly great fun! Or is that considered too underhanded?

At some later stage of the war that might be a good tactic. At this stage, the humans are still very eager to salvage Martian gear themselves, so any wreck they could get would be carted off rather than booby trapped. Of course there could be times where there was no possibility of salvage so a booby trap would be an option. Another possibility would be a trap where one tripod would be lured into a trap which would immobilize it and then when other tripods arrive to help free it, a much bigger trap is sprung, destroying all of them. Humans are so sneaky!

Well, you booby-trap it after you salvage what you want. Apply the old Viking wisdom:" Pillage first; then burn."
And, yes, if you can get them to bunch up for some reason, it can enhance the kill. Exactly what happened at the top of Glorieta Pass. Modern terrorists have used the two bomb tactic to good effect.

Sounds like the booby-trap it with a Tesla bomb things could really go "boom". Then move in to salvage even more parts - rinse & repeat. Logically, the Martians would simply stop trying to salvage any downed machine - read, all the more for the humans! PS: 8" shells would be much cheaper, but, have to try a Tesla bomb at least once. Texans love the booby-trap idea btw.

Thanks Quendil! The Texas Front book is in the last stages of preparation and I'm starting to roll on the first book of the next trilogy. We'll have more stuff for you! Oh, and there will be an omnibus volume with Books 1, 2, & 3 coming out soon which will contain some new material.

Good Job on Book 3!! It is a great mix of ups and downs for both sides. The intensity of the actions is ratcheting up, as is the scale.

Egads, Amazon is going to get a workout. Any more info on the graphic novel you mentioned. Will love to have more books and more scenario materials as well. Are you planning to explore the various Texas specialty machines in the books - like the 'Tea Tosser' ??

No Tea Tossers, I'm afraid. A torsion-spring catapult isn't going to be able to throw a 55-gallon drum very far at all. However, the Texans will be using mass rocket batteries and guided missiles!

Well, the US Navy in real life around this time period had their USS Vesuvius which threw a large bundle of dynamite a considerable distance with a steam cannon of some sort. Something like that might be a possibility. But the Texans wouldn't have the industry to build such a thing. I think the rocket launchers are more reasonable. They can be built on a cottage industry level (as we've found to our cost in numerous places around the world).

I am more interested in what Funston is doing. Are the French trying to make him another Santa Anna?
Texas lacks the king of rivers needed for riverine action. By August the rivers in Texas are long mud puddles.
The tea tosser was a bad idea.

If the Martians defeat the US then any French designs on Texas and Mexico are doomed. If the US defeats the Martians then any Texas thoughts of a second republic are going to be short lived.
