Table size can have a big impact on tactics. Greater depth can help out a human army that's heavy on artillery. The Martians can be pounded longer before they get into range. OTOH, it means most of your other weapons are out of range to start and if the Martians use their advance, fire, fall back tactic, it can be a problem for the humans.
I like big battles and I tend to use 8' x 6' tables (or even bigger)!
But the speed of the Martians is an advantage for them and there is nothing wrong with letting them use it.

I agree whole heartily - its one of Mars most potent advantages. Only long range guns and aircraft are good counters to it. Well, maybe some well placed Tesla mine fields and foo gas traps

Let us not forget Edison wire, HE mines, tiger pits, Bixby barriers, flooding, and mud bogs. Anything to slow them and let firepower work on them.
