Looking at the rules for the Tesla Gun. Are 3 dice rolled just to see if the hit penetrates the armor, so you need 11+ for an assault tripod. Or are the three dice also used for the Tripod damage chart as well. It states that they are used for the damage roll, and no additional d10 is required. Then the example is a lame one about firing at Lobotons.

If I read it correctly, the x-dice indicates the hit against the tripod armor.
So you would throw a single die against the tripod defense. If you roll the defense or higher, then you roll the x-dice against armor, scoring anywhere from 3 to 30 (assuming x=3).
If you roll a total of say 15 against an armor of 11, then you roll a single die against the tripod damage table.
At least that's how I read the book...

Take a look at this -- it tells you how to play it:

Nope, that does not answer the question. In the rules, for firing the Tesla gun, it states no extra D10 need be rolled. And by sequence that implies the 10 for the Tripod damage table.

I've actually seen a Tesla in action in several games at Historicon 2016 thanks to seydlitz and his wife's efforts. You've misread it - the reference to the D10 is for rolling Lucky Strikes, which you don't do with the Tesla roll - with 3 charges you get 3 to 30 score and you don't reroll 10s in that score. So for example, you roll 3 D10s = 2,5,10. Total score for the damage hit is 17, which usually penetrates all Martian armor values. And yes, once you penetrate you are off to the Tripod Damage Table for a single roll as usual. The really awesome thing about the Tesla is that after that roll, you're not done as long as your initial roll for power isn't triples (or doubles if using 2 dice charge), it skips to another target. In one game we played a huge advancing line of Martian machines got hit by this lady who been waiting all game to use the thing. She ended up hitting 10 different targets and destroying the advance with subsequent blowups and downed controllers! It was a wonder and she was (by me as commander USA forces) awarded the Annie Oakley medal. (See excellent games and pics from seydlitz on Historicon 2016 games elsewhere). So for the Tesla, build up charges by the rules, fire at 3 charges or less, roll to hit as normal (a miss is rough ), a hit then damages per the number of charges you've built up (1 or 2 or 3) as the power of the hit, if you penetrate, make a single roll on the Tripod Damage table - apply result - then, if you didn't roll a triple (or double with 2 die), use the rules to determine the next target of the damage per the rules. Two notes - first, the gun does not break down (triples) after the first element it attacks. So once you've rolled again your first target, the shot just arcs without a problem. Second, the picture given in the example is wrong because it clearly states "the nearest element" - the pic is wrong as the arc would of gone to the nearest stand and thus won't reach (per the pic) the human infantry stand. Although this seems all complicated, in truth we had little problem with it during the games it was played in. As a further note, it did not perform nearly as well without the lady luck the gal brought to the table. Which is why I wanted to give her an award for stopping the Martian advance in its tracks! PS: I'm mistaken about the two d10 and rolling doubles. You cannot damage the gun if using less that a full (e.i. 3 dice) charge. Sorry.

Thank you Madmorgan. I forgot about the Lucky Strikes rule.

No problem - I'm guilty of some really gross 'forgets'; yours is a small blip on the scale of some of my boo-boos.
