Here is the question. Can a unit with multiple barrels, like American mobile howitzers, Martian Grenadier drones, elect to take 3 1" wide barrage attempts on a single target, instead of a single 3" wide barrage?

Not under the original rules - but, I'd argue that 'independent fire' would be possible in 2nd edition as the battery is defending itself from on coming multiple targets.

I use a rule allowing barrage weapons to fire directly at individual targets which are 30" or less away. Each gun crew is firing independently 'over open sights' and they are treated as regular weapons like the cannons on a steam tank. But I would balk at allowing multiple barrage templates. Barrages need to be set up and calculated before firing and I'd argue that a given battery can only set up a single barrage per turn.

Especially with the need for manual calculation.

I agree with both scott & boxholder - open sights at 30" or less, no barrage. Each gun could fire independently in this case.

Setting up a barrage takes time. Setting up multiple barrages is very time consuming. K I S S.
