I know this was raised before but is there any recent interest in changing the rules in the steamer tank supplement re the 'interim steamers'?
I'd like to use S2G tanks as Canadian gasoline powered Mk IIb tank equivalents with 2 sponson mounted 4" guns and an HMG in the hull, but the Mk IIb steamers are far too slow at 3" per move and too expensive at 80 points each. Slower and more expensive than the cheaper, faster and more powerful (3 x 4"guns) Mk III on the same hull (though the Mk III has a more powerful engine).
The S2G female tank with 3 HMGs would make a fine interim steamer equivalent with all HMG armament but it's slower than the Mk IIIs infantry support tank that has 4 HMGs. However it's 15 points cheaper and not limited to being used with Armored infantry, though 3 are required for a unit.
A basic Mk II steamer can take an extra HMG with no change in speed so I doubt adding 2 more HMGs and crews would outweigh a 4" gun and its ammo and cut the Mk II tank's speed from 6" to 4" as per the stats for the HMG armed interim steamer in the Steamer supplement pdf. A basic MK II can also take 2 HMGs with no adverse effect on speed though a 4" gun and ammo clearly outweighs a 3rd HMG in the interim HMG steamer. I propose that the HMG interim steamer with 3 HMGs have 6" speed.
Their poor stats limits my use of S2G tanks to the troop transport version, the MK II with single 4" gun, plus a version of the MK IIc with hull mounted 4" gun and two sponson mounted HMGs, which will cost +10 points for the second HMG (95 vs 85 pts for the Mk IIc steamer). I suppose the same configuration could be used as a MK II with 2 extra HMGs for 75 pts. versus the usual 55: 225 per unit of 3 versus 165.
