Some time ago (during the 'heyday' of the Morlock stuff) I commented on trying to work up some sort of underground skirmish battles, with limited human and Martian forces. Whilst working on the Last Regiment stuff (see other thread), I was thinking of applying GASLIGHT rules to that game. Lo, I finally came to my senses and realized GASLIGHT is a perfect rule system for doing battles inside the Martian Cylinders! Don't ask me why the Martians have a 'door' on the outside of the cylinder. My rational (mad remember) is that there are actually two types of construct machines - the large ones (bipedal) than build all the tripods, static defenses, etc. and the small ones (man-sized but look just like the large) that 'come out the door' to start construction of the Large machine. After which, at least whilst outside the cylinder, the small ones become drones for the large machines, working under their direction. Bear with me. Thus the door! Now these small engine drones work fine inside the cylinder as it has its own powerful slaver type that coordinates the building of the tunnels, rooms, and various other chambers within the cylinder as well as pushing materials out the door for the larger engines to work with. Okay so there is the 'basis' of my scenario development.
For the actual game, I'm planning a raid on a recently misdirected cylinder which has landed behind the MS river line. Needless to say, forces are being rushed there, even as the thing cools off. First to reach it is Captain Collins with his light recon company of Welshmen. He is a 'Hero' type and quickly determines to rush the heavily damaged 'door' that is so bashed in as to be more a hatch than a vertical door. He deploys his 2nd and 3rd platoons as well as his three Defiants and 75 mm FA battery around the door area of the cylinder whilst he and 1st platoon, as well as his MG platoon charge into the belly of the beast. He (hero) commands the 1st squad, 2nd Lt. Horatio (adventurer) commands the 2nd squad, Sergeant Bodinhiggans (Leader) commands the 3rd squad, and corporal Cormac (Veteran) commands the MG squad. The weapons are fairly easy to work out with the bolt-action rifles, machine-guns, pistols, and swords all listed. As I usually base my AQ figures in 20 mm square stands, its all set for basing. The "Extras" will either be Europeans (9 Shoot/8 Scuffle) or Boers (10 Shoot/7 Scuffle), but I might up the BEF to 10 Shoot and 8 Scuffle. For comparison, the Americans are lists as 10 Shoot/8 Scuffle and I've a hard time seeing Welsh less melee effective.
Not that it matters much as the drones should be much more powerful in melee.
Currently I'm working out details for the Martian forces, which will consist of the afore mentioned engine drones and a mix of various drone units from the game. Due to the heavy damage to the cylinder, the 'slaver' that runs the drones is having problems communicating with they on a consistent basis - thus the rules for "Start", "Sustain" and "Pivot" work fine. I'm using the "Steam" column for movement as well. The weapons will be reflected by either the small arms rolled table or the artillery (small for light, medium, and large for heavy). Still working on that and the various morale elements (which the Martians don't deal with) - the critical hits tables are also spot on for the most part (with some changes to the drone morale hits). I still need to figure out how to show the proper balance to Martian melee (Scuffle) values.
Any way - any comments or ideas from you all will be appreciated - particularly those familiar with the GASLIGHT rules. All of this is from the first book of those btw. Cheers or maybe Charrrrrge!
