I've been working lately on the German Expedition Forces invasion of Martian held North Africa, specifically in the Benghazi area. My first focus was the actual landing west of Benghazi. Whether or not that is successful with your gaming group, I thought I'd show a bit of what Benghazi looks like under Martian occupation. There is no value to the Martians of towns or cities, once the Harvesters have done their work. In fact, urban terrain is a bit of a problem for the large Martian machines to maneuver in and thus most towns or cities are just cleansed then by passed. Benghazi is an exception however. The Martians logically conclude that as the human urban areas seem to attract much attention even after a lost, a city or town might be a good trap to draw in further troops to 'feed' on. As usual, the Martians don't want to be 'up front' about this, so they experiment in a remote desert site - Benghazi. They little expected a human force to descend on the town.
Using very few tripods, the Martians have experimented with Benghazi with static defenses and infantry type units defending it. Besides the usual Sentinel & Detection towers, Heatray Fences and Construction Engines, they've added several new Tower types to the mix. I base the points off the Sentinel at 25 points, being equal to an Assault tripod at 200 points with heavy heatray.
Controller Towers. These are static units with a single Martian controller - basically a non-mobile Slaver. With a single medium heatray for defense, this tower allows coordination of the various drone and lobototon forces stationed through out Benghazi. Points = 15
Controller Tower. (1) @15 points. Speed n/a Defense 3 Armor 10 Special: controller, 360 degree medium heatray
Medium Heatray Range 20"/10" Power +3/+2 Rate of Fire 1 Special: focused/sweep; Sweep
Guardian Tower. This is the central tower in the city and by far the most powerful. Based on the Overseer, it not only works as a controller and have 3 heavy heat rays, but it also has the deadly Sunray. With all this going for it, it comes in at a solid price. Points = 125
(1) Guardian Tower (1) @125 points. Speed n/a Defense 3 Armor 12 Special: controller, 360 degree heavy heatrays & sungun.
(3) Heavy Heatray Range 30"/15" Power +4/+3 Rate of Fire 1 Special: focused/sweep; Sweep; Cannot fire in same phase as any heatray.
(1) Sunray Range 60" Power +6 Rate of Fire* Special: Cannot fire in same phase as any heatray; see pages 122 & 123 for all the sunray special rules, substituting Guardian Tower for Overseer and Tripod references in all cases.
In the case of the Damage Resolution Table, make the following adjustments:
1-5^ As written 6^ Change sentence to ... The Tripod cannot do anything in its following turn, it cannot shoot, it cannot act as controller...
7^ Drop everything. Use the results of #6 above. 8, 9, 10 as is with the name change mentioned above.
Ranger Tower. This is a Grenadier as a tower. It can get its 'targeting' from Detection Towers. As such its a combo of a Scout & Grenadier.
Points = 25.
(1) Ranger Tower (1) @25 points. Speed n/a Defense 3 Armor 10 Special: Targeter through any Detection Tower; 360 degree medium heatray.
(1) Medium Heatray Range 20"/10" Power +3/+2 Rate of Fire 1 Special: focused/sweep; Sweep; Cannot fire in same phase as a Heavy Launcher
(2) Heavy Launchers Range 50" Power +2/+1 Rate of Fire 1 per Launcher Special: Shock/Blackdust; Inaccurate; Cannot fire in same phase as Medium Heatray.
Benghazi has the central Guardian Tower, with a batch of Sentinels, a few strategically placed Controller & Ranger Towers. Being added recently is a Heatray fence around the town, fortunately not on the seaward side of the town. Working on that is a couple of Construction Engines and scattered throughout the towns buildings are hidden drone & lobototon units. This is what the GEF will encounter as they land the German Marines under the gunnery of their naval assets. Points will be about 3 German to 1 Martian. Could be a real messy battle.
Obviously, you could also do a Dominator style tower. I leave that to you unless there is a cry from you folks for me to do it. The principal is the same, but it would have three shots a turn (2 HR & 1 Missile) possible. No controller function however. Martian players would be advised to put keep everything outside of 6" from the Guardian Tower - with all the German guns from the ships firing, the tower might indeed explode! Let me know what you think.
