Here is my final take on the artillery rules. Having just played three very good games at Historicon 2016 using the original rules, I found them to work really well and have only a few things I'd do different. Yes, I'm totally dropping the additional dice idea for Bombardment. I and many other AQ players were instructed by Ernie and his GM helpers that a battery got 3 dice for 3 guns and and additional die for ammo carrier. So it was wrong by his own rule set. Whether by accident or on purpose, his ruling over three days of gaming were impressed on a lot of players, new and old. It should of been one roll to hit plus one additional roll if ammo carrier was attached.
So here I present my Revised Artillery Rules for further discussion - the major changes are the addition of the Conquerors 8" Mobile gun, longer ranged 6" Mobile gun units at increased points, the ability for Bombardment to hit on table targets (original rules were for hitting 'off table reserves, and (more importantly) the allowing of 4" and smaller guns to participate as Ambush units.
Battery FA 3" guns: 3 Elements @80 points. Range 60" +3 Power Barrage 1 Special: Bombardment; may Ambush.
Battery HFG 5" guns: 3 Elements @160 points. Range 150" +4 Power Barrage 3 Special: Bombardment.
Battery HFG 6" guns: 3 Elements @240 points. Range 180" +4 Power Barrage 3 Special: Bombardment.
Battery ATG 3.5" guns: 1 Element @80 points. Range 30" +3/+4 Power Barrage 1 Special: Bombardment, +3HE/+4AT, may Ambush.
Battery Holt MA ?5" guns?: 3 Elements @120 points. Range 120" +2 Power Barrage 1 Special: Bombardment. [no indication in rules as to size, my guess, maybe a 4"]
Battery MkIIMA 6" guns: 3 elements @300 points Range 180" +4 Power Barrage 3 Special: Bombardment, HMGs. Template 4" +5 dice to hit.
Conqueror "Ford" MkIVA8 8" guns; 3 elements @360 points Range 240" +5 Power Barrage 3 Special: Bombardment. [my stats for 8"]
Rules changed to allow Bombardment to hit targets on the tabletop.
Rules changed to allow Ambush by any guns up to 4" in size. 1 gun = 1 squad for ambush.
Three element batteries could be broken up for this - one gun in Ambush and the other two guns going where ever. Yes, it breaks up continuity of the unit, but, it 'feels' wrong to have all three guns well forward like that. You all chew on this one please. I suppose you could just say that AT guns were the only ones that can be used in the Ambush role. Makes sense as well. Thoughts?
I welcome comments on this please.
