So, realistically, other than the "Martian Shuffle" what are some of the tactical nuances that the Martian forces offer? Martians do not have to worry about terrain, routing, or much else. Very few boards will have the type of terrain that actually can block LOS to a tripod. I am a bit at a loss for what they do other than move forward and sweep with the Heat Ray whenever possible.

Grenadiers instead of modified assault tripods. Even without scouts.
Tripods can still get a terrain bonus even if partially obscured.

I'm always in favor of interesting terrain. Buildings, trees, and hills can always be declared to block LOS even though the actual models don't. I mean a tripod is about 40 feet tall, so even a 4-story building would block LOS and many trees are 40 feet or taller, as are hills. Marshy ground could also immobilize a tripod, so there are lots of possibilities.
As for Martian tactics, one of their biggest assets is mobility. They are a lot faster than most human units and this gives them the ability to concentrate against a specific point and overwhelm the humans before help can arrive. Using command tokens can really make them fast. Humans have to concentrate their firepower against the Martians and if the Martians can zip around so they only have to fight a portion of the human army at once it will be a big advantage. Of course, the size of your game table will have a big impact on this.

I tend to agree, even as I have 2 GGas & 1 BDust armed tripods. They were my first tripods I built and I kinda maxed them out. Now days I'd go differently (might still with new IG stuff) and focus on Grenadiers and Scout with targeters. Much like my new armored companies (platoon of tanks with a battery of mobile arty), this combo gets the best out of two tripods. The Assaults are fine machines, especially if you allow the tentacles to do some assaulting (see other thread), but (6) Assaults at 1200 vs (3) Scouts with targeters @465 plus (3) Grenadiers @300 gives you a lot of punch for a mere 765 points. I intend to develop a quick scenario of 1500 or so points with just Scout/Grenadier cells and a few Slaver/Drones. A single Assault as command. Lets see - (6)Grenadiers @600 + (3) Scout-Ts @465; (1) Slavers @100 + (2) Drones @120; (1) Assault @200 + FC @30 = 1515 points in 13 units = BP 7 [7 order tokens] For the humans the 'new' armor units are a platoon of Ford {Conqueror} Mk III tanks @225 + a battery of Ford {Conqueror} 8" Mobile artillery @360 = 585 points/6 units. Build a 2x this arrangement for 1170, add in some command and support (Mk IIc + FC @115, HQ Battery of Mk II 6" MA @240 = 355/2 units) for a total of 1525 points in 14 units = BP 7 [7 order tokens]. All this based on New Artillery Rules, elsewhere. Nicely balance heck of a fight situation. Good Stuff!
