The Super Heavy 12" gun of Goliath and the Land Iron Clad. It states a penetration hit destroys anything. Does that supersede the Martian Tripod Hit location rule? 1 hit, one kill?

When you penetrate you roll two dice and add them together. A total of 9 or more destroys the tripod.

Wasn't that errata'd to have 2d10 rolls on the Tripod Damage Table, taking the best roll??

I found it in the errata:
This states that it rolls a combined damage score of 2d10. This is incorrect. It should read: “This gun rolls 2d10 on the Damage Resolution Chart (for targets with a chart).” This is step 3 of the damage resolution process and no Power bonus is added to the roll.

The 12" gun is supposed to destroy tripods without a lot of difficulty if it gets a penetrating hit. That is why the two rolls are added together. Does the errata specifically say you don't add the two rolls together? If you just take the highest roll, then the damage potential is the same as a tank gun. I finally got an ironclad and to reflect the killing power of the 12" gun you just cannot use the highest roll. You have to add both. What if the rolls are a 2 and a 3? You've done one point of armor damage. Anything can do that. That could happen once in a while, but not like it will using only the best roll.

The rule book says they are added together. But that is for the penetrating shot. The errata says "2d10 on the Damage Resolution Chart", but says nothing about additive or best of both. When I see 2d10, that means to me 2-20. The shell is going to weigh more than 500 pounds, as opposed to about 28 pounds for a 4 inch round. I am willing to assume the best case result for the 12" gun and let the Tripods fly!

Just an aside - this discussion should result in a change of rules or a new optional rule under the Living Rulebook - I've recently openned up both the Changes and the Optional listings. If you want to submit a change, wait till the proper page listing comes up (we've just started with pages 1-48 for now) and add it as a change (2d10 added together for penetrating vs armor). If we do lean towards doing this, I'll be making up a new list of power for the larger guns on ships for example. In this case, the 12" gun onboard a ship has the extended range plus a 2d10 Power - good stuff. A 16" would be even more awesome, probably a 3d10 (added together). And the 'new' barrage rule (Barrage = added dice not AoE) would make this a true beast - no wonder the Martians couldn't take New Orleans!

I wasn't suggesting a change in the rule book. I think a power of +7 and 2d10 on the damage table is just fine. Any change in the gun specs would also have to effect the points for the Land Iron Clad as well.
