Though I'm just getting into this game I've been a kitbasher and scratch-builder for years. Like many people I like the concept of the Goliath and considered building one until I was unable to find large enough wheels. Several companies make suitable wheels for a smaller version of a Goliath-style BEF land ironclad (I'm building a Canadian/BEF force). All are 25mm (~1") diameter; looking at the Goliath illustration in the rulebook and the size of the infantryman, 25mm wheels are about 2/3 the size needed for a Goliath. The wheels from all 3 manufacturers would have to be doubled up to get the right tread width. Of the wheels available from Zinge Industries, Victoria Miniatures and Kromlech I prefer the latter's, though they're the most expensive. Zinge Industries sells many bits suitable for use on an AQotMF land ironclad: hatches, vents and grates, HMG ports, hydraulic shocks, cabling of various diameters, rivet strips as small as 1.2mm wide, etc.
The concept I'm working on is a BEF equivalent of a MK. IV US steam tank but with a more powerful main gun and a smaller secondary gun battery. Based on the working drawings the model would be 4-5" long, 2.25" wide and 2" tall. I have lots of spare Mk II sponsons, 4" guns and HMG turrets so would have two 4" guns in two sponsons per side, between and just above the height of the wheels. Inboard of and ahead/behind each 4"gun sponson will be an HMG in a sponson, so both the HMG and 4" gun can fire at the same target. This would allow two HMGs and two 4" guns to fire in each quadrant. There would be gun ports for other MGs closer to the ground in the prow and on either side, a level below the HMGs in sponsons.
The pilot house forward would be a copy of the design used on the larger ironclads. On the upper deck behind it would be some ventilation grills and access hatches, then the main gun turret, preferably domed and equipped with either a 4 pdr Superheavy coil gun or a British naval 9.2" gun, a very highly thought of gun much used in pre-dreadnoughts and preferred by some in the Admiralty over the 12" gun. I'd give the 9.2" gun range 60" and strength 7, intermediate between a US 8" gun and a land ironclad's 12" gun, and the same strength as the coil gun alternative.
Aft of the turret will be Zinge Industries 12mm hatches representing coal bunker loading hatches and circular 12mm vents over the boiler room. A 20mm diameter smokebox and chimney for the steam engine will be built on the stern with a modified Zinge 18mm hatch for the smokebox door. The front set of wheels will be designed as if to pivot and will have Zinge hydraulic shocks for steering control.
I'm ordering the parts I need now and will start construction in January. I'm thinking the points value would be similar to the MK. IV Monitor's due to a more powerful main gun but fewer 4" guns.
