I guess one blessing for the AQOTMF rules is that they are simple enough to be modified without too much trouble. We took the command system out of (Now owned by Pendraken) Future War commander. In this rule set each race can have it's own command doctrine. We went with Hive doctrine for the Martians and either rigid or low tech doctrine for the human race. Hive doctrine is one roll of the 2d6 for all martians to perform an action modified by how far they are spread out and other certain modifiers that I can't recall at this time. There is an initiative phase for both sides and is longer in distance for the martians because of the tech advantage. This means units can act on their own without a roll of the 2D6. Humans are split into commands and can range from a 7 to 10 range for 2D6 dice rolls depending on commander ability. Usually the general for the side gets to start with a 10 to reflect his authority. Because of the chance for multiple actions all larger tech such as tripods and tanks, arty, at guns etc. can only fire every other action with a reload action in between. Human infantry and MG's can fire every action. We did nerf the MG's that they can only put 1 damage point on a tripod per action with a chance of mobility or firing damage on the tripods as well. Certain units can go into ambush which we decided was the infantry mg's and atguns and pulled those rules out of Flames of War. We can discuss those particulars if anyone is interested.....
