I've been assembling Grenadiers, a Slaver and a Reaper and am puzzled by the legs provided versus the roles of the different tripods.
The Grenadiers have small bodies, fairly large launchers and come with a relatively small midsection, two rather spindly legs and one that is much more substantial. I assumed the thicker leg went to the rear as a bracing leg when firing.
Then there are the Slaver and Reaper, with identical bodies but quite different roles. The Reaper has 3 powerful reaper claws, 2 tentacles, and is able to tear apart buildings, whereas the Slaver wanders about and controls its broods of drones and lobotons and doesn't do any major 'physical work'. Which tripod has the much heavier set of legs and larger midsection? The Slaver!
The model design does not make sense to me. The Reaper 'wrecking machine' is walking about on 3 spindly Grenadier type legs, which also give it a narrower base and less stability, whereas the Slaver's legs are comparatively massive and the midsection is bigger. Seems to me the Reaper should have the larger body and legs.
I don't know why AD designed the kits the way they are. The Grenadiers have 2 holes in the midsection for tentacles, which the Reaper also needs (the small ones, not the claws), but the midsection of the Slaver kit lacks. Could that be why the kit has the Grenadier's smaller lower body and legs? I would have preferred the kit to have a Slaver's body and legs - it's an easy task to drill small holes for the small pair of tentacles. Note that the Scientist, another tripod that doesn't do the heavy work of a Reaper, is also on the larger Slaver type legs.
I think I'm going to switch legs between the kits and put the Reaper on the Slaver's legs.
There's an issue with the poor fit of the Grenadier and Reaper kits' legs into the lower body section. The connecting area is too thin and there is too much play. With the first Grenadier I built I couldn't get the legs attached with slow setting CA glue so used 3 minute epoxy. For the second Grenadier and the Reaper's legs I used the CA glue and an accelerant, which worked well. However I was concerned about the legs' thin metal where they attach to the body so mounted them on 1/8" thick styrene bases with the tips of the legs glued into holes. Now the legs are less likely to break off.
