I completed A Company of the 15th Newcastle Battalion from my latest novel “The Gathering Storm”. It consists of a command stand and four rifle platoons. Each platoon has three rifle stands and an LMG stand. There is also a marker showing that each platoon has one of the crossbow bomb launchers that a man in the battalion invented. For those figures, I took a standard rifleman figure, cut off the end of the rifle and attached a scratchbuilt crossbow. The figures I used are Battlefront Flames of War World War I British infantry. They are really nice figures. Because the 15th are Australians I wanted to have a few of them wearing the distinctive bush hats. Finding such figures wasn’t too easy. I finally found some on Ebay and although the price was good, the figures aren’t nearly as detailed as the Battlefront ones. For future companies I may do head swaps or scratch build the hats. The statistics for the unit are: Australian Infantry Squad: 3 elements armed with rifles. 1 element armed with a Lewis Light Machine Gun. Points per unit: 45 Add Crossbow Bomb Launcher +5 points Weaponry Range Power Special Rifles 15” - - LMG 15” - Rapid Fire 2 Grenades Assault +2 Bomb Launcher 10” +2 Note that the crossbow marker is just a marker. It is not an element in its own right and cannot be targeted or destroyed. It simply notes that the unit has the crossbow bomb launcher and the unit retains that capability until it is destroyed.
So, I have three more companies to paint and then a machine gun section with eight machine gun stands and a mortar section with four mortars.
