Martian Empires has been part of the Fighting 15s stable of products for just more than a year, and at first sight not a lot seems to have been happening. This is simply because as Eureka Miniatures' agent, it was increasingly difficult to find time to devote to developing the range, and pick up from where Mike of Black Hat left it. I no longer have Eureka Miniatures or AB Figures to worry about (apart from getting rid of the remaining stock
), and so I am starting work on overhauling Gladiator Miniatures (Black Hat's 15mm lines), including Martian Empires. Martian Empires has its own section on the Fighting 15s website.
What has been happening over the past 12 months is that I have started making new moulds to replace those that have become a little tired. This is done as required, in other words as soon as I notice things wrong with castings from the original moulds. So there are new moulds for the regular octasaurs, the Cephalod infantry and civilians, the metal parts for the Martian tripod, and I've re-cut a little used mould for the Giant Tribal infantry to make it run better, and to avoid having to remake the original mould for the same code. I have made mental notes to redo moulds for the Giant Tribal's octasaurs, the hexosaur and others.
The cold cure moulds for the resin items have all been redone. However, the Prussian steam tanks in particular are mould wreckers and I will be revisiting these to make them cast more reliably without tearing and without the need to grind off large chunks of resin. As a result there will probably be a bit more metal in these kits than previously: some of the parts make more sense cast in metal than in resin.
I have inherited the basics of the French: some camels, a walker, and the initial French infantry and camel corps. Apart from the camels and the walker, it's time to start again. I'm currently trying out a new sculptor with a view to recreating the style of the original releases (British, Imperial Martians and Tribal Martians) for the French. Don't expect anything quickly.
I have a lot of pictures to redo for the website. This is technically my priority after fulfilling orders and dealing with anything that needs attention immediately.
The Martian Empires Yahoo! group, like other Yahoo! groups, is about to die, and I have been offered refuge here. I am yet to find a place to make the files readily accessible.
Best, Ian
