What do the groove leading to the front of the rounded ridge on the head, and the ridge itself, represent? Seems odd that it has no detail as it's a relatively large feature. Was it supposed to be some kind of air intake, a position for a light like the Dazzler on the Red Martian, or something else?
I can't leave it looking so plain. What to do?: drill a hole and put a very short piece of styrene tube in it to frame an air intake, add an MV Products .209" red railway engine light? The resin tripod heads have holes in that position so I suspect it should be some kind of air intake.
Ideas?

no idea - more research necessary here.

Could be an opening for a loudspeaker. HG Wells refers to the Martian tripods communicating with sounds. They could also use sirens or horns as a demoralizing tool (as did WW-2 Stuka divebombers). In this case, it could be painted black or drilled out as an opening or covered with a bit of fine screen wire or photo-etch grid.
Alternatively, it might be a searchlight / headlight opening. Then, following loyalist's idea above, use a model railroad white headlight.

Wells described the tripods being equipped with a very loud siren-like device for communication over fairly long distances, so a loudspeaker is an option. The Red Martian model has a recognizable siren added under the right edge of the hood but that functions more like a Stuka's sirens. I'll check the 40K bits collection for some suitable grills to add at the front of the ridge

I'd add (now days anyway) a gatling like AA weapon - he's anything but up on new tech & definately wouldn't want to be hit by aircraft. Stat as a Light Heat Ray RF4 or 5 vs aircraft Assaults.

Maybe there should be just a few Assault tripods with that feature.

Indeed, I've sure the Martians would do some ad hoc designs initially to help units in the field until they either produce a totally new concept (AA tripod) or convert some hover drones to intercept status.
