I got back from Fall-In 2016 up in Lancaster, PA yesterday. Good time/bad time experience. The good was all the companies and their wares, the great games featured (400 Dervish Sword & Flames battle at the docks!), the new companies with startups, the convention center making a comeback under its new management, the usual good food & drink as well! The Bad - I injured my back again like at Historicon 2015 - I just can't take the long time on concrete floors (vendor area/flea market) anymore. After a while, my back goes into a horrible series of spasms causing me to collapse and requiring long bed rest, pain pills, and little else. As it was, I'd just finished picking up my new Paper Terrain items and heading to the bathroom when I basically collapsed in the restroom stall. HMGS staff was on the scene soon and after much pain, I was wheel chaired back to my room (luckily in the resort as well). Well, kinda, they had to put us in a different room as the chair lift only went to the 3rd floor not the 4th. All I can say is my best friend and buddy from Nam was a trooper, hauling my fat butt in the wheel chair, bringing me foods, and even making some purchases for me at the vendors. I literally was flat on my back most of Friday and all of Saturday. We left very early Sunday morning. By that point, the 800mg doses of Advil had worked to the point that I could shuffle a bit with a cane and could drive from his place home. I'm still on heavy Advil and heating pads and have great difficulty just getting to the bathroom. The hot shower is a blessing and I bask in it for a hour at a time. I'm sitting here as I type with heat applied to my back. As for the convention, there were a few surprises. A new startup company featuring 1/1000 scale models for both historical and their fantasy history battles between Spain, USA, Britain, and Germany. Nice looking ships. I might get some soon, especially the smaller destroyers. More on the convention later - pain meds call and I'm going to log. Till next time

Morgan, I was very sorry to hear about your health problems. My friend saw you in the wheelchair and told me about it and the fact that I didn't see you after that had me worried. The ambulance parked outside the hotel Sunday morning was a bit worrisome, too! Glad you made it home and glad that we got to talk at least for a little while. Take care of yourself!

Morgan, I feel for you. I've struggled with back issues for years as I work in a heavy manual labour intensive workplace.
Take care

I can sympathize with you Morgan, having experienced sporadic back spasms for years after a work injury in my late teens. Fortunately they went away and stayed away for most of the time I've been active in martial arts, probably because core strength was maintained. Hope you recover soon!

Thank you all for the well wishes - does me heart good to be thought so kindly of. And sympathy to any who've suffered a similar problem. My Nam buddy Bob took great care of me and despite being flat on my back most of Friday and all of Saturday, he got some shopping done. My biggest regret is that I'd only done 2/3 of the vendors floor at that point and so missed two isles worth, including MBAs convention specials. In any case, the biggest problem is that I'll probably not be doing any more conventions. Its really painful to think that I'll miss one of my favorite outings as well as the good times with my buddy Bob, but, this is a warning not to push it again. I've listened. Hmmm, time for that muscle relaxer again

Morgan, So sorry to read of your health issues. May you soon experience renewed strength and peace! ...As for the convention, there were a few surprises. A new startup company featuring 1/1000 scale models for both historical and their fantasy history battles between Spain, USA, Britain, and Germany. Nice looking ships. Any idea what company that was?

Gads, give me a minute and I'll look them up in the program book- Deadly Warfare Games. Their rule set is called Black Smoke, Blue Water. The write up says its 1898 Pre-Dreadnought. They feature at present three fleets; USA, Spanish, and German. The game is fantasy historical, but the figures can be used for Historical as well. As I mentioned 1/1000 scale. And relatively inexpensive at around $9 (vs GHQ 1/2400 at 10.95 and Spartan way higher price). Each ship or pack of ships (destroyers etc.) come with a card for stats, gunnery, etc.

My prayers are with you. If you can afford it, see an orthopedic specialist. Adaptive shoes may help you enjoy conventions again. They also make canes with built-in stools.

Thanks - I'm off to an acupuncture treatment tomorrow. I had good shoes on (SAS) with no help. This has happened to me the last two conventions I've gone to and I'll take the hint. 3rd ones a charm - I just don't want to do this to myself anymore. And besides - they're changing the venue to Somerset NJ next year for Historicon - no way!!
