A question for the board:
Does anyone know what was the rationale for the hula-skirt extra armor strips on the veteran tripod? Or, failing that, can anyone make one up?
It would seem that a complete belt around the perimeter would make more sense if you were going to add armor. It would also be more consistent with the armor faceplate and the greaves on the front of the legs.

Maybe the armor covers critical internal components?

Or weak spots like seams in the armor?

I've wondered about the model concept. The leg armour looks OK but I wasn't impressed by the strips on the head. It was probably a relatively cheap upgrade to the Assault model instead of making a new resin head.

Maybe the new owners can offer bits and pieces for special order at some point.

Look pretty? - FAILED!
I have some Plastistruct checker pattern plastic sheet (for safety tread deck plates) that are a not a bad match to the applique armor parts, so I can make the armor however I wish. I think mine will have more coverage that the commercial model.

I think it's mostly for visual effects. A tripod with slightly thicker armor might not look any different than a normal tripod to the casual observer (like different models of a Sherman tank). They just wanted to make it look cool and different.

As long as they don't get a rule "Jumbo Lead the Way" like they do in FoW.... GD do I hate that rule as a German Army player...

My thought isn't that the armor isn't thicker, but there is extra bits that have can be blown away in liu of a near miss. A different representation could be the first armor hit doesn't count. Of course that first hit is a lot harder if the number needed is a 12 vice 11.

I agree that there should probably be more armor shown. I've supposed that it should always be a different color as its made from Terran/Martian metal combine or just Terran materials, so somewhat effective rather like the Texas extra armor plates. A possible rational for the lack for the non-leg sections is 1/too much weight (not being Martian light metal) 2/constricting rotation of the head 3/supposed that the operator moves armor section around to met incoming fire (rather like a shield). One thought for modeling would be to leave the leggings as is and use a totally different model material for the body - like the Plastistruct material.

Maybe just sand bags tied over vulnerable areas?

He he! Except for lobototons, Martians seem to prefer all things metal.
