For a long time I have been looking for a primer I could apply with a brush or an airbrush, in other words, a primer that does NOT come out of a spray can.
I think acrylic gesso suits this purpose. My results have been good so far, but I have not tried this on large plastic pieces, yet.
Does anyone have experience using gesso as a primer?
I have been using one part gesso and one part airbrush thinner. I am using a regular brush, but I want to use an airbrush. Gesso has a pretty course pigment, so the airbrush may be a bad idea.

I've only used it on canvas to prep for a painting. Gesso's too thick for model use imo - will obscure fine details. The stiff I use for basing material is essentially gesso with fine real or resin sand mixed in (Liquitex brand).

I use Vallejo primers , I brush them on but they are fine for airbrushing as well

Don't know for airbrushing but my X was a professional artist that painted figures as well and she used gesso exclusively for that; brush applied.
