Who could not love it when the trains meet the tanks?!?! They combine all of the features that guys love: Large, fast-moving, dangerous things that make a lot of noise.
Admittedly, they had severe limitations, but they functioned well for a period of time. They could relocate a lot of firepower quickly and were reasonably survivable when firing indirect.

I love the whole armored train scene as it gives a nice backdrop to defending the smaller towns and some small cities that haven't got Fortress Walls and such. The rail network is extensive as mike points out and I'm sure the Martians are tearing up any track they find - if not due to the armored trains then for the metal to mix with their own for drones and lesser tripods. I've always wondered what the Martians are doing about the lack of resupply of 'Martian Metal'. They surely are salvaging as much as possible from destroyed machines, as their stockpile of their precious metal grows smaller. One of the few things working against the Martians - a human force conquering an area can use the materials of their enemy to replace and build tanks, etc. But, the Martians superior metal isn't available in conquered areas. I plan to do a scenario soon of just such a recovery effort, with a Recon force or maybe some Texans interrupting the party.

Admittedly, they had severe limitations, but they functioned well for a period of time. They could relocate a lot of firepower quickly and were reasonably survivable when firing indirect. Especially 1910 America. The rail network was much more developed than the roads. One thing 21st century folk often forget: In the AQMF time period, the number one means of transport was: Water. Ships, boats, barges. The mega-engineering project of the era was the Panama canal, and canals connected a lot of the middle US together. This is from a man who used to have a job in Lockport Illinois. Yeppers, folks. The corn from the midwest used to go to market via barge. The next most significant means of transport was rail. General Sheridan made a habit of taking up the railroad tracks to cripple the confederacy. There were frequent raids behind enemy lines to destroy track in the Civil War, although the Confederates learned they tied more troops down by forcing them to guard the tracks. I doubt the Martians much care about disrupting human supply routes, but the Martians do covet the refined metal which they re-purpose. There is still a significant amount of commerce being carried by horse and wagon. Wells Fargo ran stagecoaches to some towns as late as 1910.
