The US Army looked for ways to develop a true combat railroad car beyond bolting artillery pieces to flat cars. The first attempt was to up armor and mount tank guns to a snow plow car. The snow plow was reinforced to act as spaced armor and to withstand the shock of bulldozing damaged rolling stock of the tracks. Additional armor was hung on the sides. Versions included the light weight Mark IV seven inch gun turret and a standard naval five inch gun turret.

Wow nice work. I'd suggest Scott look at the possibility of doing some armored trains for his 15 mm line as well as they could also be used for historical games set in Russia and elsewhere (Ottoman Turks/Arabia). Look forward to the rest of it.

It would definitely fit in a German army. They were obsessed with big boomer traincars long after it was proven just blowing up the tracks kind of made them useless.

A coat of Army Painter primer I believe now gives it some coherence. Added two machine gun positions.

Yes very nice indeed. I'll probably do something similar now that Conqueror has given us fumble fingered modelers some ready main gun turrets

I should have read more carefully. I hope the IC guys will do the same thing. I'd like to replace 2 of my 3 Monitor tanks' turrets with regular Mk IV from the Patton kit and use the heavier guns on bunkers. When it becomes available I'll get one of the command tower to use as the artillery director.

I do hope IG will offer at least the gun if not full turret for the Mk IV with 5" gun. I realize its a low priority, but, a simple added spur or single gun piece would 'fulfill' the rule books listings and not require a whole 'new' boxed tank just to have a 5" gun. It true the 7" brings power and range to the table, but the no move to shot thing can be very deadly to the tank in combat with the mobile Martians. The 5" has a nice +3 Power at the normal 30" range. The 7" a +4 Power at 40". The ability to advance, fire, and retreat could be a major difference.

The monitor also has 6x4 inch guns, four of which can fire forward. Once the 7 inch has cracked the armor, salvos of 4 inch fire can bring a tripod down. Yes, I still think the Mk IV should cost 290 points instead of 190 points, and be a Machine. Selling individual parts, or at least individual stories would be nice someday.

Yes as long as you're within their 30" range - which means you're in heat ray range as well. Which kinda negates the advantage of the 40" range - one less power and you can ply a +3 Power shot, followed by 4 x +2 shots, and everything else you can put on target. If you're using the revised Hotchkiss guns and the fact that there is no reason you couldn't fire those two, you could really sling a lot of lead on target before the heat ray fries you, plus you can possibly get back out of range as well. Just saying.
