For the newer Terra made tripods I use a flat pewter paint. The tripod differ a lot from the 'landing' machines and reflect the less flashy metal look due to the need to use some earth metals mixed with the standard (limited) martian metals. There is a movement now among the Martians to recover destroyed tripods and drones to 'harvest' the meta for recycling. This could also generate some scenarios with Gatherer machines getting recycling materials off a battlefield under the protection of a small cell of Scouts and a leader Assault. A quick look at such a force: (2) Gatherer Tripods @55 each (using the Black Hats EMPV10 Celphatoid Handler and Reaper 'garbage bins' with a extra 5 points for a Light Heatray (per the figure); (2) Scout Tripods @300; (1) Assault Tripod @200 + FC @30 = 635 points in 5 Units = BP 3 [3 order tokens] Nice a small, perhaps even on a 3 x 3 foot table area - up to you what forces to put against them, but suggest fast moving company or a cavalry patrol with some armored cars. I really like this idea about different colour metals for earth production tripods! Lots of interesting ways to make the tripods look unique and stand out. When I get around to painting mine I'll be borrowing this ideas, thanks madmorgan!

Hey folks, I'm going to be acquiring a rather large collection from a friend that bought into the KS in a big way but has yet to assemble anything. I was wondering what color everyone is painting their tripods. Has anyone used/tried Tamiya's Translucent Silver - and if so, what was your thoughts on it? I'm trying to figure out what paints I should start to acquire to my collection that would make them unique yet make them "pop" without them being just a solid silver/chrome color. FWIW I have an airbrush, so I'm not limited to using brushes (I play Flames of War as well). Thanks! My plan has been to spray the whole tripod with a army painter metal spray, simply for the speed and convenience. Then pick out bits with a gold or brass etc metallic to break up the gun metal/chrome. Finally wash the whole thing or just various parts with whichever wash looks best, green, blue, red. I don't want to spend ages painting these. Personally I don't like using metallics as I find them a pain to work with. A friend recommended the Vallejo air brush metallics. I found the much better than standard metallics, though still a pain! They are what I'll be using.

I've seen some burnishing rub on hobby stuff that gives a nice color metallic look to craft projects - will have to try some on a spur and report back about the results.

I think the product is called RUB 'N BUFF. It comes in a range of metallic colors. It is a kind of waxy stuff so it will adhere and smooth out when buffed. They can be mixed and applied over each other to get some different results. Eventually the stuff dries.

That is the line. Ty. I keep forgetting to ask my honey when she's on line (not home this week) what it was called. Only real downside is the drying time - but, the finish is nice and as you say lots of colors and combos to choice from. I figure making your own mix of 'Martian' would be fun.
