Hey folks,
I'm going to be acquiring a rather large collection from a friend that bought into the KS in a big way but has yet to assemble anything. I was wondering what color everyone is painting their tripods. Has anyone used/tried Tamiya's Translucent Silver - and if so, what was your thoughts on it? I'm trying to figure out what paints I should start to acquire to my collection that would make them unique yet make them "pop" without them being just a solid silver/chrome color.
FWIW I have an airbrush, so I'm not limited to using brushes (I play Flames of War as well).
Thanks!

Always test your paint on a piece of spur for any plastic model you intend to paint. This will insure both the color you're looking for and also that the paint doesn't 'melt' the plastic (doesn't happen with acrylics usually). You can also use different scale figures for your games as long as the humans are all the same size. For example, the FoW Great War figures are all 15 mm vs the 18 mm scale of the AQ figures. But, if all of your human forces are 15 mm, it looks fine, they're slightly smaller against the martian machines a lobototons, but that just make them all that more fierce looking. The size of the 'human' lobos is explained as due to the cyber installations in them. I also do 1/72 & 1/87 scale (HO train) human units as well - as long as all of you human models are the same scale, it really looks good. Welcome aboard the A(Q) train.

Yeah, I paint mostly with acrylics (Vallejo, Tamiya, and the odd Reaper paint). I'm trying to figure out what colors to use as i don't want all my tripods to be shiny chrome. I'd like them a darker color chrome, and the transparent colors looked interesting. Another thing I was looking at was Vallejo Metal Color range, mostly Magnesium or Steel... But I'm just looking at what other people did for their tripods to get some idea on what colors i want to paint them....

I use Army Painter plate metal spray as the primary color with Vallejo air brush chrome (I actually dry brush this).
I do the shiny tripods because I like the visual dichotomy between the forces. The cold beauty of electromagnetic propelled steel vs smoke shrouded rusted iron.

Army Painter also has a number of washes to give the metallic different tones, reddish, greenish, bluish, purple-ish (?spelling). They are acrylic and compatible. They also thin well with water and go a L-O-N-G way.

I'm trying actual chrome, which is very hard to pull off. Primary complaint so far is that other colors won't stick to it.

Also losing a bit of detail, but I think I can fix that.

That is pretty chrom-ey. Like a trophy statue. When I first paint my first box of tripods I tried I think krylon spay metallic and I had the darnest time applying any washes.

@ tenchuu seriously mate, that colour is amazing, are you using a.k. or a non acrylic oil based? Have you tried applying a clear varnish then going from there? Back to the thread. I've been doing some research via the model aircraft folks, I here you can buff the oil based up nicely. However you then need to be thinking about health n safety, extractor... I here tamiya metal acrylics clog your needle, quickly (but that's here say). I'm using the made for airbrush latest Vallejo metal line. www.acrylicosvallejo.com/es_ES/metal-color/familia/33 It sprays better than the vallejo primers, put it this way minimal tip cleaning on an assault tripe. Hope that helps. From an airbrush noob.

I tried a lot of different techniques, none of them satisfactory because the really high chromatic reflection of chrome is very hard to duplicate. Most things saying they are chrome are not. This is a big brand spray can (forgetting the name) with five or six coats and a polish to get it the glossiness of real chrome.

For the newer Terra made tripods I use a flat pewter paint. The tripod differ a lot from the 'landing' machines and reflect the less flashy metal look due to the need to use some earth metals mixed with the standard (limited) martian metals. There is a movement now among the Martians to recover destroyed tripods and drones to 'harvest' the meta for recycling. This could also generate some scenarios with Gatherer machines getting recycling materials off a battlefield under the protection of a small cell of Scouts and a leader Assault. A quick look at such a force: (2) Gatherer Tripods @55 each (using the Black Hats EMPV10 Celphatoid Handler and Reaper 'garbage bins' with a extra 5 points for a Light Heatray (per the figure); (2) Scout Tripods @300; (1) Assault Tripod @200 + FC @30 = 635 points in 5 Units = BP 3 [3 order tokens] Nice a small, perhaps even on a 3 x 3 foot table area - up to you what forces to put against them, but suggest fast moving company or a cavalry patrol with some armored cars.

Sometime back my lady shown me a bunch of burnishing metal cream like stuff she used to give metal appearances to some of her hobby boxes. Really cool. Unfortunately a recent check shows she'd used them all, so I don't have a product name for them. But, it occurs to me that they might work really well for this kind of thing. Will check at Walmart for some of these.
