I highly recommend the Model Masters Metallic Black spray paint for the base.
I'll have to get a couple pictures in to show it off.

I'd like to see the photos. I converted an Assault tripod to a Red Martian and haven't been able to decide how to paint it.

Will do. It's drying now. I'll take some pictures before applying blood streaks and other stuff.

Here it is. I like the way the red paint I used as blood. I'll try to get a picture of that as well.

That would be a nice contrast to the usual aluminum or gunmetal paint schemes but I'd hit it with dullcote to get rid of the glossy finish.

Hmm well I for one like the glossy look, makes it look very 'alien' for the metal. To each their own - great look in anycase!

Good color scheme. I use a metallic black myself.

Yes and a bunch of strategically placed blood & gore spots and you've got the horror of the Red Martian. Actually, this paint scheme would look great for a bunch of tripods, particularly the Harvester!

Looks like a 'congo dance line' with those behind him. I'm not so sure about the flat red eye area - somehow its just kinda flat vs the nice streated red on the metal finish. Just me.

I'm not a fan of the Red eye either. Not sure what to do there.

I sanded away the eye area and replaced it with a 10mm red rhinestone. Faceted, it adds some dimension to the face. It catches light from many directions and almost seems to be illuminated internally. I also replaced the heat ray lens with a 3mm red rhinestone. Here is the result:
The hotspot on the rhinestone eye is from the camera flash, not from any internal lighting. The heat ray is pointed right at the camera.
