During the attacks on St. Louis, the town defenders put together some 'terror tanks' so named due to the terror of the Martian attacks. In a desperate attempt to help with the defense of their city, the factories hobbled armor plates and makeshift engines based on gasoline together (all the steam engines & coal powerplants being used for the regular MkII etc. tanks). They even found a stash of 1.65" Hotchkiss rapid fire guns to put into the turrets. These guns were scheduled for MkIV 5" & Monitor tanks, but the contract had been cancelled. Later in the war, the plans were found among evacuated papers and the St. Louis Terror Tank was born. It became a favorite to build as it was easy using scrap materials and featured some unique (for the time) track system - both easier to make and seemingly more efficient. Later additions included a radio and MG in the right most hatch (one with triangle shaped facing). The Terror name stuck and became the official title for this vehicle. It was included in armor and some infantry formations as a substitute for armored cars - no quite as fast, but good for all sorts of uses.
'Terror' Tank Unit: 3 elements Price per Unit: 90 points Type: Tank
Speed 6" Defense 4 Armor 7 Special: Gasoline fueled; Radio; 5 man crew; new track system.
Hotchkiss 1.65" Gun: Range 30" +1 Power RF 2 Special: Turret
MG: Range 20" +1 Power RF 3 Special: Hull, front arc only.
Optional: for an added 10 points per tank, unit can function as Forward Observer (per my revised rules in General tab FO units).
This unit is built from the excellent Conqueror 'Soviet Terror Tank' (in 15 mm Historical tab on their site). The more I looked at it and the historical blurb, the more I wanted to include it somehow into the AQ world. The unique track system would be the advent of the famous BT series and on for the Soviets and all those rivets begged USA tank. The actual models are also relatively inexpensive at GBP 4 each (about $5.68 at 1.42/GBP - the kicker is the 22% shipping fee as always). You could also change the gun to a 57mm (BR 6pdr) giving the following stats:
57mm Gun: Range 20" +2 Power RF1 Special: Turret. This causes no change in points. I prefer the Hotchkiss myself as the vehicle is a little slow for the shorter ranged gun (vs the Defiant speed).
My intention for all this is to provide a recon vehicle to replace the no longer available AD USA Armored Car. Thus, Conqueror gives us yet again a nice alternative to scarce models. Enjoy!
PS: as of this writing (8 Aug 2016) two important changes have occurred - the GBP is at a new low ($1.30 atm) and IG has started making US armored cars again. So $5.20 gets you the above and IG is using the old prices pretty much ($35 for box of 3 = $11.67 each), its your choice. I like both models and really like the Conqueror one!
