May 28th 2018 in the US we remember those who Served their Country and never came home. We also remember those who served and have passed away.
Remember the Dead.
Respect the living.
And to those who choose to be outrageous in their "Freedom of Speech," (not many around here)
Remember what your freedom cost.

I wonder how the humans will commemorate the dead from The Great Martian War?

That will depend if there are any Humans left to do the commemoration.

"The tree of Liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." -Thomas Jefferson
Thank God that there are still enough patriots around.

I wonder how the humans will commemorate the dead from The Great Martian War? Cook outs and alcohol.

In my story " The Battle of the Savoy" I mention a Statue of a US Marine erected in Tokyo in honor of the Marines from a US battleship, who came for cerimonies and good will, but who fought and died against the Tripods of an errant cylinder. The British created The Order of the Thunderchild.
It would seem that the Battle of Saint Louis and the Missouri Campaign, as well as the Memphis Campaign would merit special awards.
Perhaps Sarah should inspire an award as well.

Interesting ideas! Prior to World War I the US military had very few decorations. Pretty much none, actually. The Congressional Medal of Honor was really about it. But during WWI they instituted a number of new decorations for soldiers and sailors and kept adding to them. Campaign ribbons and unit citations and the like all came along later. In Book 2 of my series, I advanced the timetable a bit and had Andrew awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Today the 'fruit salad' is extensive and pretty much tells you almost everything about a service member's career. Having a number of these myself, I think it enhances the rather dull uniform. To all who served and for those who remained behind awaiting their return - a Salute!
