My co-author, Jonathan and I are working out details of the French military which appears in the upcoming "Texas Front" book. I had a wild thought today: In real life the French infantry of thi9s era wore baggy red pants. They quickly got rid of them when World War I started. But against the Martians, the red pants would be the perfect camouflage in an area with the Red Weed!

We are discussing the French, after all.

Ah, but the French of this era aren't the French of 1940. In 1914 it was all about the attack. Always the attack. That's how they could lose 125,000 men in one day in August 1914.

Is camouflage based on the human visual spectrum a problem for the Martians?

Well, that's a good question, isn't it? If the Martians are sensitive to infra red, then conventional camouflage isn't going to work well at all.

But, their vision might be dazzled by big fires or flares. Also, some sort of "cool suit" might render the wearer invisible to IR. There is usually a countermeasure for any measure deployed.

I think that Camo has been shown to be useful but really has no game effect.

Correct, indeed! It is one way that the game world diverges from reality.
The presence of CONCEALED markers takes the place functionally of camoflage.
Except for the esthetic aspect, game pieces could just as well be poker chips. That is one reason that I say "don't overthink" stuff. Enjoy the game at whatever level of craftsmanship you have.

I wonder what kind of tanks the French would have? Would they stay the course of AQMF and have steam or would they use gasoline engine tanks?

Okay, as noted before with my WW2 objections, the French Have WW1 tanks, they are listed in my TO&E and OOBs for the French. The Renault has three versions (command, HMG, 37mm) and there were two other monster box-like types, one with a 75mm gun. Now, I can see the 'modern' version proposed above if you all insist. But, the bulk of French equipment would be the Renaults with a few others thrown in.
I posted the list of WW1 French tanks with the article about the French Armor. Note, that in principal I don't disagree with a 'new' design with more punch, just as I find look too WW2 for my taste. Of coarse, the French player wants a 90mm (read mobile ATG) on the battlefield. I'd think it would be more like SPA initially, for simple design and production reason. Gas powered is good as well.
As to the uniforms, I'm going with the FFL with the distinctive pants, as there are a lot of good French figures from Old Glory, etc. To each their own, but, on my AQ battlefield, the FFL will be very different looking and install the Elan they were know for. I just feel that using similar 'red pants' units waters down the morale and visual effect of the FFL units.

The French had two basic designs for their tanks. A box on tracks and the Renault. Both "box" designs had mobility issues. They could not cross trenches well. Neither design accounted for the gun crews being able to load, sight, or fire their weapons. They looked cool, fought lousy. The Renault was possibly the best tank used in WWI. It was undergunned by WWII standards, it's 37mm was not good against other tanks, but it had good mobility.
The French had good guns in WWI and in early WWII.
French Troops had many flamboyant uniforms.
I would think that against the Martians they would mount as big a gun as they could on a as mobile a platform as possible.
