I bought a Khaki jumpsuit from Dickies. I want to use it, along with my Campaign (Smokey Bear) hat as the basis of a AQMF costume.
I am vexed by several things.
A: according to what I have seen, WWI uniforms had no decorations, name tags, or much of anything other than rank insignia and a unit patch. I do have a line on a Jackalope unit patch, and I have rank insignia.
Should I go with the plain uniform?
B: My same research shows no insignia of any type on the hat. The Officers Crest on the hat came in WWII. So a plain Campaign hat is in order, or so it would seem.
Any advice, folks?

The hat was plain except for the cord around the hat. Light blue for infantry, yellow for cavalry, red for artillery & engineers and green for the medical corps. Orange came late in WW 1 for the Signal Corps.

I was under the impression that US uniforms were two pieces: shirt and pants. Leggings from over calf to shoe tops.

True.
Tankers and pilots often wore one-piece uniforms. This was because belts and buckles caught on stuff inside the vehicle.

I picked up some shrinky dinks. They can be printed on with an inkjet printer then shrunk.
I'm going to print the side view of a Mark III to use as a pin for "Armor." I will also fake an expert marksman badge, and include Rifle, Grapple, Tank Gun and Forlorn Hope as items.
It occurred to me that pins might make good giveaways at demos. Therefore I may also do a Tripod.

Sounds like a cool costume idea! I'm currently working on a doughboy kit because I'm interested in WWI history, but it will look great at an AQMF event as well. Post pics when you have the components!

Two thoughts - there are WW1 recreative groups out there - check on some sites for those. Second, I've a catalog from Medals of America - MedalofAmerica.com. They have a huge listing of stuff to include Rifle, Pistol, and other badges. I recommend them to you attention for other things as well (Unit patches etc). Check them out to see whats available and suitable for you really Great Idea!!
