Sounds like a mission to capture a live Martian is called for! A little gas experimentation and a whole new type of attack is available for holdfasts. I heartily agree that any other targets would be a waste of time - both due to the speed of tripods and the sealed nature they present.

Problem is capturing a live Martian is easier said then done, they once had a live martian and while much was gained, not enough was gained.

Well if it was easy it wouldn't be a very fun scenario now would it.

Well its not a matter of catching them, its a matter of keeping them alive, they don't do so well when captured and usually die afterward from various issues so keeping them alive for "testing" of chemicals and such is not an option at this time. or more technically their time.

Not in my universe. A captured Martian is going to have a long, rough time being experimented on in my universe.

There will always be an issue keeping enough Martians alive to perform useful tests.
I imagine from the martian point of view, this is an eternity.

The problem is, is catching a live Martian, the book makes note that only one live martian has ever been caught and he died shortly after from the tests and its injuries, the book makes it out that without the tripod martians will not survive.

I'll not debate the number of Martians that survive long after capture.
The more important thing is that now, with Harvesters, Scientists and Gatherers all looking to gather humans as subjects, perhaps it is time for humans to go on the hunt as well.
Some scenarios where humans try to capture Martians, and where martians in damaged machines need to be rescued.

The fluff on the Grenadier Tripod, mentions that there is some debate as to whether it is crewed by a Martian or controlled like a drone. A scenario to capture one would be interesting.
