According to most accounts I've read, only England was attacked in the first invasion. Even so, Australian technology would have benefited. There is no question that the British Government would have looked to India and Australia and Canada as places to keep the Government safe.
Portee type mounts for coilguns would be excellent. Move the guns between prepared positions rather than a static defence. It was the Australians who kept Rommel out of Tobruk.
The Airship is ideal for supporting combat in Australia. Moving troops behind Martian lines, scavenging martian tidbits, setting traps etc. Small, fast vehicles with little armor but big guns, carried to the right place at the right time by Airships. (Too bad there's no helium in Australia....) Coilguns could probably be good weapons for Airships, but I don't want a million cubic meters of hydrogen anywhere near a heat ray.
BTW: I think Scott did a nice account on why humans can't use Martian weapons.
Any way you look at it, Martians are going to have a bad day when they meet the Wizard.
(I can't get that image of a Tripod with a tree root shoved were the sun don't shine out of my head.)

Australia was building its own warships so certainly has ability to build bigger tanks. However I think there would be a focus on smaller mobile vehicles and large artillery / sea/river vessels. Whilst Australia did not have much of a road network in 1910 it did have a very extensive train network, much bigger than today.
With regards to Martian control, I think we would see most of the population of towns and farms scatter then hide then come back once the Martians had passed. Certainly would be lots of human raids to collect crops behind enemy lines.
As for Canberra the Martians could easily miss it, certainly wouldn't appear as a significant settlement in their telescopes. Canberra could become the behind the lines main human resistance centre. Geographically it is very remote from other towns and cities, No reason for the Martians to go there initially, its not on the road from sydney to melbourne.

Would Australia build Landships? It seems to me that the wide open of Australia would be most suitable for them.

Perhaps a better question would be: Why would they NOT build Landships? Hardlec makes good points about terrain and industrial base.
However, it would seem worth considering the use swarms of smaller vehicles, armed much more heavily with anti-tripod artillery. Concentrate on rapid cross-country mobility. The Mad Max analogy would fit well with the hypothesized reaction of the Aussie population (see post above). Avoid the attackers, infiltrate back behind them. Lots of tactical flexibility, more easily hidden for ambush and the larger numbers dilute the effectiveness of Martian weapons.

Guppies are great. In addition to guppies, one way to kill a shark is with a bigger shark.

I favor either approach as long as the Martians die die die....

ok other than the fact that we seem to have ended up talking beer (should have known) i think we all agree the Aussie might have been able to put up a better fight than the fluff says (plus support from other powers in the area?) hope when the second ed comes it might be at least more of a fight if not a on going front

I'd rather not wait for a second edition.
As Fortress Europe gets going, there will be more European troops and equipment available. No doubt much of this can be applied to Australia.
Already there are things like the Texas Tea Tosser which have a bit of "Mad Max" flavor. Likewise the Texas Rangers, Villistas and even Apache figures could be used.
One area of interest would be whether Royal Marines would come ashore to fight, and how they would do things.

I think that: The Empire would find a way to get Australian volunteers the kit they needed to resist and Australians would resist until the Martians were exterminated.
