A proposed new weapon for the Assault (or other Martian) Tripods.
Name: Heat Cannon
Range: 45"
Power: +4
Special: Accurate
Accurate: Roll two dice for the both to hit rolls and to damage rolls - taking highest result each time. Roll two d10 when rolling to see if the target is hit and take the highest die roll. If the previous roll resulted in a hit, roll two d10 when attempting to damage the target. Take the highest roll, apply the weapons +4 versus and compare against the targets Armor stat to determine if a damage was scored. (Note even though two dice are rolled to hit, and two dice are rolled for damage - only a single damage can be scored. This weapon will not score multiple hits)

Funny, Gregg, this is getting sculpted (Dominator Head for size reference only, this will be for Assault Tripods) now. It will be a focused heavy heat ray - not able to sweep and possibly able to get off more than 1 shot a turn.

Awesome! I proposed this cause I could definetly see Martians trying to address their range deficiency, and making sure the shot counts! Multiple shots or a barrage would make it even better!

I've long advocated Gen 2 and even Gen 3 Martian tripods and weapons. This would definitely be a Gen 2 or perhaps even a Gen 3 due to game balance. I would suggest that it be Rare (ei 1 per 2000 points) and require a Scientist tripod to be in the army, staying within 6" of said Rare, to insure proper operation and fine field tuning. The effects of this on the game should not be overlooked - major shift to the Mars favor.

There will be restrictions on how the new weapon can be taken in Martian Forces.

Yes certainly you do not want every tripod to be able to mount these new special weapons. I like the system infinity uses calles Special Weapons Cost... which further restricts special weapons. (In infinity you get 1 swc for every 50 points of models - things like rocket launchers cost 1.5 swc)
So you could assign these special weapons an special cost and limit them (by scenario) but perhaps the default is 1 special weapons point allowed per 750 points ...

I've been playing since the end of first edition. Special Weapon Costs are built into the rules, so it would require a big change to implement. I'm thinking of optional themed lists that both fit the expansion narrative while allowing for different and restricted options.

Also I assume things like SWC makes the ruleset much "heavier" than what is required for the "target audience"

I believe there is a rubric for limited "rare" weapons, i.e. one per 500 points or one per 750 points, etc.
The idea is that with a 2000 point force, you could only have 4 such weapons for limited/500points or 3 for limited/750points.
Just remember that a super weapon is also a prize target.
