Shortly after the Martians landed in Africa and in Siberia it was obvious to Pope Pius that the European's mistrust of each other would cause them to delay action. The Sultan of Turkey was of the opinion that the great powers of Europe would stand by and watch as the Martians destroyed the Ottoman Empire.
The Knights of Jerusalem were created as a joint venture between the Moslem and Catholic churches. Other religious leaders were included, and an ecumenical council created the Order of the Knights of Jerusalem, a military order intended to defend the Holy Land against the Martians.
In point of fact the Knights of Jerusalem were units from the Armies of the major powers as well as mercenaries who would allow military action in Africa and the Middle East without disrupting the delicate diplomatic relationships in Europe.
Troops from the major powers, trained and equipped as regulars, would "volunteer" to serve with the Knights. Refugees would join the Knights. Mercenary troops because they had no home nations, they would fight under the training and discipline of one of the Major powers.
The French Foreign Legion was all but destroyed defending French colonies in Africa, but it lives on, under the battle worn Banners of the past, in the Knights.
Knights of Jerusalem are battalion sized units of the major powers or "mercenaries" trained and equipped as units of the Major powers.
The French Foreign Legion is a special unit of the Knights. Using French equipment and wearing their traditional Kepis, The FFL with not break.
Otherwise, the Knights are a way for players to combine several different nationalities together.

Another good idea. Probably better than my three 'religious' armies presented earlier.

The differences between the Muslims, Christians and Jews are actually trivial. (I say this as one who has read the Torah, the Bible and the Koran.) When faced by the Devil, and the Martians play that part well, I have no doubt that they will come together. The scene in "Independence Day" where British, Israeli and Egyptian fighters were preparing to face the invaders together underscores this.
My major reason behind creating the Knights was to allow folks to collect several factions and still be able to combine them into one army.

Choice is good, and monster battles with dozens of tripods on one side and vast numbers of prey on the other side can be fun, too.
I did not collect much Soviet stuff for historical games. I found post-imperial Russian designs ugly. Imperial Russia is much more interesting to me. I will certainly collect some Russian stuff, and some French stuff, although previously I would have probably only collected German stuff.
