So, considering how important artillery is in the game I always thought it a little strange that there was no formation chart published.
In mind for the BEF an Artillery Brigade in AQMF would look something like: Field Gun Company: 3 battery's of 3 field guns Heavy Gun Company: 2 battery's of 3 Hvy field guns and 1 battery of 3 2lb cool guns
Plus related transport, munitions and HQ.
They're too important an element to be simply attached to a tanks corps or mobile strike regiment. It makes send they would be a formation in their own right.
Although most commanders would prefer the SPA battalion for its mobility, there's never enough of them to go around. So, the Artillery Battalion is called in to booster defenses or punch through the Martians.
Battalion Total: 2820pts in 12 Units* = BP 6 [14 order tokens] *(a huge number of non-BP fliiver units)
1st, 2nd, 3rd Battery ec: HQ Squad (3) Armored Flivver @15 + HMG @30 + Ford Ammo Carts @75; (1) Armored Flivver @15 + HMG @10 + Radio @15 = 285pts/0units *all non-BP units ! [one flivver with ammo cart to each battery]
1st Battery: (3) FA guns @80 = 80pts/1unit 2nd Battery: (3) FA guns @80 = 80pts/1unit 3rd Battery: (3) HFG howitzers @160 = 160pts/1unit (2) Transport Squads ec: (3) Armored Flivver @15 + HMG @30 = 90pts/0units [Tow for FA batteries] 1st Tank Platoon : (3) MkIII @225 = 225pts/1unit [Tow for HFG battery] Battery Company Total: 920pts in 4* units = BP2 [4 order tokens]
As always, you can always assign parts of the battalion to a given battle. French Old Glory WW1 line has 75mm and 155mm guns that can be used for fill ins to your AD collection. As a whole, the battalion is easy to break relative to its size - all the non-BP flivver units are pretty important. The firepower of this organization is impressive. Indeed, the Russians propose side by side battalions to really stop a Martian advance. If they could only get them together in one place and not be overrun; six batteries of 75s and three batteries of 155s and three platoons of MKIII - a real Martian problem! Enjoy!
Now I need to do the BEF counterpart. I'll need to research this a bit more and see what Old Glory has available - I think it will be without coil guns initially as they're too much fiddle when a good 25pdr or 32pdr would fill the roll. We'll see Here's the SPA battalion mentioned above for another thought on USA artillery in the AQ1916 period.
Recognizing the need for a quick response unit, this battalion is often deployed to plug the line or as support for a major attack on Martian positions.
Battalion HQ: (2) Mk IIc @170; (4) MkII Ammo Tender w/HMG# @160; FC @ 30pts (1 off the MkIIc) = 2 Units @ 360pts # see comment A Battery: (3) MkIIMA 6" Howitzer with HMG= 1 Unit @250pts B Battery: (3) MkIIMA 6' Howitzer with HMG = 1 Unit @250pts C Battery: (3) Longhorn ATg with HMG = 1 Unit @270pts (per my Texas thread) D Battery: (3) Holt Light Howitzer with HMG = 1 Unit @160 (precessor to MkIIMA) E Battery: 3x (1) Texas Tea Tosser @200pt ec + (2) Ammo Wagons @ 30pts = 5 Units @600pts
Total for above battalion as is is 1890pts having 10 Units = BP 5
Additional Aviation Company: (2) Recon Airplanes DH-2 @90 = 2 Units @180pts (2) Bombers FE-2b @100 = 2 Units @200pts (2) Attack Airplanes F2b @130 =2 Units @260pts
Adds 640pts/6 Units/BP 3 to the battalion total thus 2530pts having 16 Units = BP 8 [12 order tokens]
# as of this writing, the Munitions Tender is a rare beast. Not sure how to take care of this, I suspect I'm going to use Old Glorys MkI converted ammo carrier (under Brit WW1 listing, last item) for the time being. Note that the Ammo Wagon is from the Old Glorys American Revolution line (AWI), basically a wagon with barrels. You can also use a General Purpose wagon from the Brit WW1 line with some barrels to represent these. Also, you may want to leave out the D Battery, making the E Battery into the D battery. It might be hard to get the models for conversion (basically cutting the barrel size down). Enjoy!
PS: Since doing this thread, Conqueror has come out with a very nice ammo cart that could replace the MkII Ammo Tenders. You can either use the their Steam Tank - Ammo Supply for the above cost or just the Ammo Cart for 30 points. Here is a reworked SPA Battalion using the new 'Ford Motor Co.' Conqueror models.:
Important: All Conqueror models come equipped with radios.
SPA Battalion A
Battalion HQ: (2) MkIVC @170, (3) Ammo Carts @90*, FC @30 (one of the two MkIVC) = 260pts/2 units *(non-BP units) [Ammo carts distributed 1 per battery below] A Battery: (3) MkIVA 6" Howitzers with HMG = 250pts/1 unit B Battery: (3) MkIVA 6" Howitzers with HMG = 250pts/1 unit C Battery: (3) Longhorn ATg with HMG = 270pts/1 unit (per my Texas thread) Reserve Battery: (1) Texas Tea Tossers = 200pts/1 unit (independent) + (1) Ammo Wagons = 30pt/0*units (*non-BP units) total = 230pts/1 unit Aviation Company: as above = 640pts/6 units (independent)
Total Revised SPA Battalion A: 1930pts in 12 units = BP 6 [9 order tokens]
I realized after doing the above that some folks don't have any Texas models from AD - as such it seems only fair to do the battalion without those units.
For form sake, I'll call the above SPA Battalion A and the below SPA Battalion B.
SPA Battalion B
Battalion HQ: (2) MkIVC @170, (3) Ammo Carts @90*, FC @30 (one of the MkIVC) = 290pts/2 units *(non-BP units) [Ammo carts distributed 1 per battery below] A Battery: (3) MkIVA 6" Howitzers with HMG @250 = 250pts/1 unit B Battery: (3) MkIVA 6" Howitzers with HMG @250 = 250pts/1 unit C Battery: (3) MkIVA 6" Howitzer with HMG @250 = 250pts/1 unit Reserve Battery: (1) MkIVT Tesla Tank @350 = 350pts/1 unit Forward Observers: (3) MkIVG1 Tanks @165 + FO add @30 (for 3 elements) = 195/1 unit [see General Thread, Revised FO for rules]
Total Revised SPA Battalion B: 1615pts in 7 units = BP 4 [8 order tokens]
I've provided FOs for those who don't like/want aircraft in their scenarios - if you wish to include the aircraft, they can be added as shown (640pts/6units) or reduced to observation only (2x DH-2 @90/2units) or a more robust observation/attack role (2x F2b @260pts/2units). Of coarse we'll all want one of the new Tesla models from Conqueror right (??!); if not drop 350pts/1unit and total goes to 1265pts in 6 units = BP 3 [6 order tokens]! You should probably beef this one up with aircraft - remember you can always abstract aircraft presence for observation types by just having them 'in the area' without being able to be attacked by Martian machines. Adding just the DH-2s gives you 1355pts in 8 units = BP 4 [6 order tokens], making for a more balanced force. As always, you can assign individual batteries from this (or any) battalion to specific battles.
Having conferred with the fine folks at Conqueror, its been pointed out that the MkIVA is actually an 8" Howitzer not the 6" I originally purposed. For late war scenarios, you should probably introduce the MkIVA8, say Fall 16 on - perhaps one Battery per quarter of a year.
Battery: (3) MkIVA8 8" Howitzers with HMG @300 + HMG @30 = 330pts/1unit (1) Ammo Cart @30 = 360pts/1 unit
MKIVA8 Speed 6" Defense 5 Armor 7 Special: Open Top, armor 1 less than standard Conqueror Armor 8. 8" Howitzer Range 60" +5 Power Barrage 1 Special: Bombardment, may be broken into individual elements for AT duty - ammo cart cost 30 Per Gun.
This breaks up nicely as 110pts for one if used independently as an AT element. It might not be cost effective to add the Ammo cart to this for 140pt AT SPA, but a +5 shot doubled might really turn the tide. Enjoy!
This was all done back in Jan. and doesn't reflect the current 'New Artillery Rules' we've been discussing. Simply plugin the values from the new stat table as needed and redo the math - it will cost more as you move into the 6" & 8" pieces.
