I actually have 2 veteran tripods, 9 assault tripods, 3 scout tripods, and 2 grenadier tripods as well. Three have black dust launchers, one has green gas grenades, and all the scouts have regretted. That's almost another 3200 points. I also have almost 5000 points of US stuff.

Awesome collection billf. I drool at your collection even more. I'm heavy in Assaults and Scouts, which make a good force balanced with the other stuff I have. Look forward to your next battle report btw. Say, are you going to repost your Convoy one?? It was really cool and inspired a number of similiar ones from me. Just asking. (2) Veterans = 500 (9) Assaults =1800 (4) BD & GG = 200 (3) Scouts/t = 465 (2) Grenadiers = 200 Total = 3165 with drones +1525 Grand Total Pod billf = 4685 points in 35 units = BP 18 [23 order tokens] At 50% = 2343 Break Points. That is if there is only (1) Sniper squad?? Wonderful layout billf!

I will get in touch with primalucem. He posted all my battle reports for me as I could never get any pictures to upload to the old forum. Don't know if he joined this one.

I have been in contact with primalucem. He said he will put some battle reports up, including the Vicksburg campaign ones. He might have already done it.

Ok, so I tried a game last night with veterans paying an extra 25 points for the controller ability, it seemed to work ok.
Very crazy game! 3 tripods & 1 unit of drones gone at once!
CRAZY!

Wow. Must of had some good artillery there! I'm growing into the Veteran as controller idea - just wish someone out there was picking up the gauntlet for making Martian Tripod figures - I understand why, but there is certainly for a different casting type of martian machine, still a tripod with the look somewhat of ADs, but with a different 'tone' and look, more 2nd or 3rd generation tripod. Not meaning you folks, you've got a great line and certainly don't need to make martians; you've got a lot of new stuff in the pipeline & working and all of it is needed/wanted by us out here. Look forward to posting my first order with you soon. The concept of a 25 pt add on controller function works okay with the 'no fire' concept I think. I'd prefer a 2nd or 3rd generation Slaver model that looks different and basically is up armored - maybe as much as a 12. Again the Reaper models come to mind, as at $15 each for the 'mini' 2.5" tall one it even looks a bit like a Slaver. So here's another idea:
Whipper Tripod Unit : 1 element. Point per element: 200. Type: tripod. Speed: 6" Defense 6 Armor 12 Special: Controller, either Reaper tentacles or claw. Weapon: Medium Heat Ray Range 20"/10" +3/+2 Power Special: Sweep (3) Reaper Tentacles: +2 Assault Special: Gatherer/Harvester function OR (1) Reaper Claw: +5 Assault Special: Gatherer/Harvester function
Whilst I'm on these I'm doing another installment to "Martian Rules" tab - this time I'm adding the above plus 2nd generation Dominators and Overseers. Enjoy!

We actually ran them with the ability to shoot, (after some discussion) we decided that the drones having only 10" range and the veteran having 40", it was almost not worth taking drones.
Veterans are tough no matter what, but we had 3 veterans with a total of 190 points of drones (1 flying) + a slaver with one more unit of drones, so the way that I saw it was 190+ 75 for veteran controllers worked out at about 265. So that's at least 1 - walkers off the field.
Really it was just a trial, it made the Vets quite expensive (also with the launcher & grenades), but it seemed to work ok.
I'll try to put up the battle report tomorrow or Friday & you should get a good laugh

I always liked the idea that if there were no controllers, then the remaining drone and lobototon units would start moving in random directions attacking (just basic close combat rating) anything that they came in contact with, including each other!

Gads how chaotic. I'd go for the 'automated' part, with the targets being any prey-that-stings creature its little 'eye' picks up, going for the nearest of coarse. As an aside, I see the Rebel figures as a 2nd generation construct and the Black Hat machines as early 1st generation machines - the Gatherer and as yet to be named machine. Kinda like a sniper, the drone unit fixs on a human unit and attacks it as normal, always closing with it (reaper tentacles remember!).

Has there been a consensus on how many points it will cost to add a drone controlling ability to a Tripod?

Yes, no, maybe. I would start with 20 points and change it based on experience.

Hmmm I've seen +25pts - but, really vs a scientist @80 or slaver @100 or one of the other controllers (Reaper,Overseer, etc.) that seems very low for the power over a non-fixed number of drones. I think I like wisercjs automatic targeting with (from me) the drone attacking the closest target through movement and fire/assault. I'd never really noticed that the common drone has Reaper Tentacle assault! BTW I've figured out what the Black Hat Cephalod figure could be a Founder, with at least a medium heat ray (why would it be defenseless!?). So the BH models work for a Gatherer (with a container from Reaper Bones) and a Founder w/MedHeatray.
