I've been mulling over one of the AD rulebooks stranger rule, the Barrage AoE templates limitation to 4" size. When AQ first came into my sights, I when and bought a Litko 6" diameter elevated clear template, as the pictures of the various pieces from the box set didn't seem to be transparent. I even mentioned in an email to Ernie that they didn't look like you could see through them by their ad photos. Long story short - the 4" template came with the game & worked fine. But, the Barrage rule was strange as anything over 4" had to be modified at +1 Power per 1" over. I understand why they did this. But as we move to the Living Rulebook and the AD canon drops further away, there is no good reason why you couldn't have a 5" or 6" diameter template and Barrage. As we start to include 'super' large guns, such as railroad artillery and naval guns in large 10" plus caliber, it makes sense that these guns would fire a larger AoE barrage. I purpose that as an optional rule, a new maximum of Barrage 6 be set - this allows you to have Barrage 5 & 6 AoEs without any of the awkward addon modifiers. And at 6" you can start to add +1/1", although this would be a Huge weapon. Now we can give the Goliath and LIC HE capability with an awesome Barrage of 5 or 6" and start to see those predreadnoughts & dreadnoughts be the monsters they really are. Comments??

Makes perfect sense to me

I think a larger template for heavier guns makes complete sense. I've played several war gaming systems, including the late 1980s Canadian army's 1/285 scale gaming system for training, and all increased template size with heavier guns and/or larger batteries. Although there's no ground scale in AQotMF I think the artillery template is too small for use with heavy guns.

I am more of the keep a uniform template for any bombardment be it four or six inches. Improved hit chance based number of guns firing similar to FOW.
The issue I see with bigger templates is there is no place safe for Martians on the typical crowded 4x6 board. Big guns already get a free bombardment as it is .

I'm all in favor of bigger templates. I was about to write that there should NOT be an option for using a smaller template with the pluses to the power OR a larger template-it should be all one or all the other. But then I reconsidered. The smaller template with the pluses could represent armor-piercing shells which would have a much greater strength against armor, but a smaller blast radius, while the larger template would be HE shells with a smaller damage potential against armored targets, but a larger blast radius.

That is a good idea. I like that it gives more flexibility for larger caliber guns.

I'm not sure everyone has the funds or time to get 'new' 6" templates is the problem. If you have a starter AD boxset, you have the template for playing the game. As a thought, check out the 'rounds' in the knitting/sewing section of a Walmart or craft store. There are round 'templates' for doing patterns, in a variety of sizes from 1" up to much larger. They all have are very small grid pattern on their interior, which would allow you to see through them and a color marker could be used to outline smaller increments - all though a collection of size would be easier and they're not expensive. So, back in the day, I got a set composed of 1",2",3",4",5",6",7",8". Over the years I've replaced their usage with Litkos excellent line - but, in a pinch, I can still grab a 2" AoE with confidence.

Just get a compass and cut them out of cardboard. I swear we've gotten spoiled with all the fancy stuff available these days!

Hahaha, yes indeed. But once you can see through under the template, you'll never go back! LoL, you're right & I suppose you could get some thin stiff clear plastic sheet and compass/cut them to size. One of my least high priority to try atm.

I agreetoo withorevious comments. Alao make a template out of clear plastic. Just grab some flat plastic from some packaging ee all just dump in trash. ... This is not rocket science guys

aaah, the humans do need to look into rocket science - more vollys of rockets! Anyone heard from deathfromabove lately. He's been strangely quiet over the past month or so. I miss his ideas and feedback on all this.

Barrages are based on the number of guns firing, the length of time, the amount of deviation they adjust between rounds, the rate of fire, the bursting radius of shells and the amount of ammunition allocated. There are several techniques to firing barrages including harassment and interdiction, firing a few rounds sporadically on a giving point, such as a crossroads to discourage the enemy from using it, point concentration, in order to destroy a position with many rounds fired in rapid succession on the same firing solution, search and traverse, in order to cover a wide area with a few rounds by adjusting the deflection and elevation between each round.
These could be reflected by having a larger 'area' template option with reduced chance of hit or a smaller 'concentrated' template option with increased chance to hit.
That said, as one of AQMF's main appeal is its simplicity so I would hesitate to make too many changes or options.

Recent discussion on the General Table about the whole AQ artillery issue will help with your statement. I like the change from bonus power to bonus to hit dice in an AoE. One template, but the barrage function allows for more chances to penetrate armor - as most artillery didn't have AP shells until recently. Do get in on the discussion under the general tab if you have the time. (write the book scott! never mind us trying to distract you lol).

I actually think that the 4" limit then convert to extra power as written works best. If you think about it, bombardment is technically a barrage of multiple shells falling in and around the same impact point. In order to get a larger beaten zone you need more shells on target in the same time frame either through a higher rate of fire or more tubes firing. Larger guns are also slower firing guns. For that reason the current system probably best reflects the increased power of the individual shells.
To be honest, I wish the artillery process (barrage template and how it works) was closer to the way it works in Flames of War. The template is square, not round and covers a fixed area. The power and attributes of the gun battery firing affect the chance of achieving damage. It also allows for options of double wide templates when a large number of tubes are firing or if the battery is equipped with quick firing artillery (French 75mm mle1897 howitzer being the benchmark weapon for this timeframe).
