I think I mentioned that I have TONS more Tripods than I do have US Armor....... So I've been searching, just like Governor Colquitt in Scott Washburn's book "Texas Salient", for weapons systems to help defend the Lone Star State. Went ahead and built some LRSC cars and the Wichita Six Shooter like he describes. I have the spare rails set aside to make some Coyotes too, when i get back on track for them. Anyways, I figured with the French assistance the Texicans made some new European friends, and have been shipped some Renault steam tractors, which they have used all available machine shops to make into more steam tanks for their under supplied units. I started out with this kit, the MAIN reason was that it had TWO tanks in it, for around the same price as other comparable kits which only have one model per box. The model is very basic with very few parts, there are two treads, two body halves, and a three part turret. I trimmed the mounting pegs on the body parts to make them shorter, as I wanted the treads to fit closer to the body. I did not use the turret at all, since it only has room for the one MG. I can use those for scenery or fortification add on's later. The first one I did I actually used some rounded sprue plastic which I shaved more round to simulate a 3" or 4" gun barrel. Then used a pin vise to drill out the gun barrel. The coal hatch on the rear of the AQMF steam tanks looks REALLY GOOD for the top hatch of the Armadillo, I had some barrel mounts which I had cut the guns from for other conversions, so I sawed them down for the hatch on top of the hull, then put the steam hatch on top of it.

I did play test the tanks last Saturday with a friend, I took six platoons of them along with supporting infantry and artillery, in a 1000pt game. i used the old MK1 tank rules so they were pretty cheap! Only a 3" gun though, so only a plus one (+1) for penetration. The Martians had five Tripods, so 1000pts was easy for them to get. I think the numbers of the Texicans kind of messed with the Martian minds, we took lots of losses from units, but only lost two units toward the break point by game's end. Some more pictures of the finished Armadillo tanks. Also have some other models I've been working on along with them.

Here's one closer up with the steam hatch, it looks really good, but now I have to find some other hatches for my regular AQMF tanks I stole them from!!!

Now, I had an idea since I built the first six, and that was to "fix" the hatch issue without stealing any more steam hatches from the "real" tanks. Thumb tacks. Not the plastic stick ones, but the older flat/rounded ones made of metal. I could add some thin paper strips to simulate the hinges at the rear of the hatch, maybe one small handle too, using either cardboard or paper. Cut one off so far, it might work!!!

I cut two strips of printer paper and glued them to the rear of the thumb tack. Primed after the glue dried, and then painted this afternoon. It looks okay, the coal hatch just seems to have much more detail to it! Whatcha think?

Thanks Quendil!!! I am going to try one at the rear of a regular steam tank too, see if it looks okay back there. I already did a different one out of a bottle cap, it seems to work fine too! More of a hexagonal one, but with the rounded cap in the middle it looks pretty good to me! I'm also trying to "fill" up my coal bin before priming too, I put some putty in there and then some glue, drop some sand on top and WA LA, instant COAL!!!

The caps look pretty good to me. Because of you, I've been eyeing of those Renault's. Great to see them "IRL" and not just on a box.

I got into the game two years ago, I had some extra cashola from selling old gaming stuff, and saw two auctions on Ebay. One for the Martians, one for the humans. So snuck in a couple of years after it began, closed, opened, closed and got sold again. Probably like you, I'm short of human AQMF tanks, so have to make my own. "Counts as" in my games!

Good-looking work!
"Counts as" is the key to play when exact models are not around for whatever reason. Demanding too much rigor in a fantasy world is the path to madness. None of this is real.
An understanding opponent is solid gold.

Just got six more FAT Renaults in the mail yesterday, already glued the hulls together so I'll get to modifying them this morning.
I'll be up to TWELVE!!!
Next thing, finding some plastic card to make bases out of.

This is what the Renault 75 looked like, I think I've stretched it a bit for the Texican Model. Mine is definitely shorter!!!

It was in the original WW1 design a two man tank, with the 37mm or MG turret on top.
Commander/Gunner was there behind the driver in front.
I MAY be stretching my modification by putting the 75mm gun in the front where the driver sits......

you are fine if those are 1/72 scale, as AQMF is 1/100 roughly, so there should be room still for a 2-3 man crew. you would probably have a commander/gunner/driver, and an Engineer/loader with the gun hull mounted the whole tank has to turn to aim so the driver is likely the gunner, though with a periscope port its possible that you have the view for the commander and driver offset on opposite sides of the breech and have 3 crew with a Driver/gunner, Commander/Loader, and Engineer, with the commander being able to replace the driver or engineer as needed with the engineer being able to take over loading duty if the commander takes over driving.
