One of the common threads in 1st Edition is the relatively uselessness of Infantry, Lobototons and Drones were. Infantry were not equipped with a weapon which could reliably penetrant a tripod. Drones and Lobos had to stick close to a tripod or be statues. Lobos were also either close combat or had a short range weapon.
Changes in 2nd Edition include:
Control range of Lobos and Drones increased to 12" and if they are out of control range they move and attack the closes enemy elements.
Drones now have 2 structure points so they take 2 hits to destroy.
Lobototons now have the Feel No Pain rule. If they take a hit from a weapon with a +0 or +1 Power they ignore the damage on a roll of 8 or more. They are also equipped with both close combat and ranged weapon in the same element.
A 3 element German infantry squad now comes equipped with a man portable heavy weapon such as a anti-tripod rocket which can penetrate all but the largest of tripods with a little luck, or a flamethrower which is shorter range but hits automatically and can roast multiple enemy elements at once. They are all also armed with hand grenades to use in hand to hand combat and ignore cover.
Now the small guys in both the human and Martian armies have a reason to be fielded and can serve important functions on the battlefield.
