One further thing from a friend of mine who has seen the movie. No where in the entire show is there any sound of artillery fire. No distance booms, no rolling barrages fired, no sound of blazing guns at all. He was really disturbed by the lack of what was one of the major sounds of WW 1. Anyone else who has seen it notice this??

It is there in several places but is somewhat muffled or muted.
Also, the plot line of the movie involves mostly traveling across the land between the opposing forces. So the artillery might be holding back so as not to disclose its location until the action is seriously joined.

Anyone else who has seen it notice this?? I did notice that, too. There are a few times when something can be heard very faintly, but I agree there should have been more of it. And since it's something that would just be added to the sound track it costs the producers virtually nothing. Not like they actually have to have real artillery
Movie producers should really hire nerds like us to help them out with this. It's amazing how even real high quality productions can miss stuff like that. Whenever I watch Saving Private Ryan I'm always disappointed that during the incredible Omaha Beach landing, there are several times when the camera is pointing directly out to sea--at a big empty ocean. Where's the awe-inspiring invasion armada that everyone who was there mentions? It's not like they couldn't have put it in because later they Do show a beach crowded with LSTs.

Indeed, one would expect that computer graphics could have filled the ocean with plenty of ships...

On a side note, I bought "They Shall Not Grow Old" at Walmart for $5. My grandfather joined a Irish Regiment at age 16 was gassed 3 times and survived the war. Sadly he died when I was only one year old.

I've met many WWI vets. They were old when I was young. Now, I am old.
None of them would talk about their experiences.
I was a cold warrior. It never happened, I was never there. And yet I remember. I got a tiny taste of what those men experienced for years.
War, real war, is the harshest, cruelest and least humane things that humans, in our elitist arrogance, ever do. And we do it so well.
The Movie evoked emotion. Probably too much emotion for me.
There was something, some undercurrent, that re-awakened all my experiences. They were not good experiences.
Rent the video, it's on redbox. Watch it with care.
