Ok this is all good and fine - but, who makes these models??? Is that a prototype of the new Red Death? I think the LIC has just been modified - it would be easy enough even for a ham hand like me to add those elevations with painted wood dow. Another possibility is that's a Shapeway 3-D designed figure. There's some really good modelers out there doing 3-D designs on ships & planes - it would only take one to start doing variant AQMF figures.
The really good thing about not having a lot of pre-defined variants is that modelers have free rein to kitbash and modify as they wish.
The Martian war fragmented the response by Humans, so "anything goes!" Different regions and different manufacturers could come up with a variety of designs. Thus, gamers are not bound by restrictive rules about equipment or miniatures. Whatever opponents agreee upon or rule "coiunts as a..." is viable.

There was no backdoor at the Alamo. Planet Earth doesn't have one either. Fight and win or DIE!
Well, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The design is very sleek - looks much 'faster'. So perhaps a higher Move is in the works. The down side is it's lack of 'hands'. The older machines had to hold their heat ray guns, but it also allowed them to pick up objects and move stuff in their way. More versatile in many ways.
It certainly would not be the first time that "experts" in labs far from the battlefield created unsuitable weapons, vehicles or equipment. The poor troopers have to make-do and extemporize until the right stuff finally reaches them.
You are not able to go to war with the weapons you want. You go with the weapons you have.
