I have recently discovered a type of fabric called oly-fun. Unlike felt it is washable, can be painted or colored with a marker and I may be able to print on it with an inkjet.
What ifs aside, I have some fabric and some known techniques to make some fields with crops on them.
My plan is to make "fields" between 8 by 8 inches and 12 by 12 inches.
In terms of scale, these fields are barely big vegetable gardens. It terms of looks on the table, however, this should work.
I hope to have some battle reports soon.

I like this idea! I've done the old floor mat approach in the past, you buy one of those with the yellow bristles, and cut it up for fields. Maybe an inch tall, they look fine on the table but aren't exactly level for figures or tanks. For when you need those precise measurements! "Hey, you're out by half an inch!!!!!!"
