The Martian attack on Kansas City as depicted in " America In Flames "- The Great Martian War - a book by Scott Washburn. The book describes a second Martian invasion following the original Martian attack in War of the Worlds by HG Wells.
Strategic Situation.
President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the evacuation of the Great Plains and the fortification of the Mississippi River after the catastrophic defeats from the Martian invaders at Albuquerque and Scott’s Bluff in early 1910. Several cities that could be supplied by river were fortified and defended despite their isolation from the main Mississippi defensive line. Kansas City was the largest of these bastions. Publicly, Kansas City represented the president’s political and military resolve to eventually reclaim the lost territory and maintain the morale of the American people. In private, the president and his military council knew that General Farnsworth and his 37th Infantry Division were doomed and hoped the anticipated Martian attack on Kansas City would at least delay any Martian offensive against the Mississippi River defensive line.
The West Bottoms, Kansas City.
The Martian attack on Kansas City came from south of the city directly from their holdfast near Nevada, Missouri. The west flank of the attack was naturally funneled along the south bank of the Kansas River as it made its northern turn to the Missouri River and the river plain that is home to the massive Argentine rail facility and the Kansas City stockyards. It was at the final line of defense along industrial and warehouse area of the West Bottoms on the south bank of the Missouri River that Martian attack inexplicably stopped. When the Martian attack resumed the true horror of their intentions for humanity became all too clear.
Table view is looking north to the Missouri River from the stockyards. The first rows of buildings are aflame from the initial Martian attack but the dockside facilities have been spared.
Human Situation:
Defeat is inevitable. A navy flotilla has managed to reach the West Bottom docks. Defend the West Bottoms to allow the remaining civilians and wounded a chance to escape via riverboat. The USS Weston and a Marine Landing Force will help cover the escape. Refugees and random combat reinforcements will arrive from the east or west edges. The wounded and medical personnel will leave from the train shed converted to a make shift hospital.
Though officially evacuated of nonessential civilians in 1911 city still had hundreds of people providing support to the army and care taking duties of the mostly empty city. During the proceeding month an every increasing stream of refugees from the west as people that avoided the original evacuation can no longer hide from the increasing Martian presence.
Victory points - 2 points per civilian refugee/ police patrol / medical element that reaches the river boat
1 point per combat element or refugee /police patrol that reaches the river boat OR the
The victory points are contingent upon either ship not being destroyed and escaping.
Special Rules
River Boat.
The river boat is quite vulnerable to attack. Though sheltered behind the concrete grain elevator the boat captain will not hesitate to cast off once the situation becomes dire.
The morale of the boat is 4. Role for morale at the beginning of the human turn if a Martian machine is within 20 inches. Subtract one from the morale die roll for each additional machine closer than 20 inches. If the boat fails morale remove it and any accumulated refugees from the table during the first movement step. The human player can use an order token to reroll a failed moral check.
USS Weston.
The destroyer is docked and providing fire with one forward 7” gun, two starboard firing 5” guns, starboard 20mm cannon and one heavy machine gun. Use the land ironclad rules in the main rulebook for damage and combat.
The morale of this ship is 2. The ship will roll for morale during the human starting set if it took damage the previous turn.
Subtract one from its morale die role for every loss of a gun turret, boiler damage, or critical hit sustained so far during the game. If the ship fails morale remove it and any accumulated evacuation markers from the table during the first movement phase. The human player can use an order token to reroll a failed morale check.
For every armor damage on the ship removes one evacuation marker to represent casualties among those that made it to the ship.
The human player can remove either ship during any movement phase on command.
Martian Situation. The attack on the prey-creature city 3-20 is proceeding according to plan but with higher than expected losses to the primary combat machines. The prey creatures' primary defenses have been breached and the heavy projectile throwers have been destroyed. Clan Leader Braxjandar, sensing the defenses on the verge of collapse, has ordered the primary battle groups to halt the attack and will commit the harvesting and gathering machines to mop up the survivors for much needed sustenance.
Victory Conditions. The Martians receive one victory point for each human element captured by the harvesters or gatherer machine during assault combat. However, the capturing machine must survive to claim the points at the end of the game. If the machine is destroyed any victory points gained are lost.
The Martian player will gain 1/2 victory point for each civilian and medical element left on the table at the end of the game.
Special Rules. The Martians were unaware of the presence of the prey creature combat water craft and quite surprised when a harvester took an unexpected hit from 7 inch naval gun
The Martian Dominator machine is placed in the reinforcement pool. The Martian player can begin to roll for its arrival the turn AFTER the USS Weston fires on a Martian mach
