The Coming of the Martians is an audio dramatisation of the original War of the Worlds novel, that appeared on Kickstarter in 2015. It funded, and then there was the long wait for it to be completed. Delay after delay ensued, and after the joys of the AQ KS, I was thinking "here we go again". So, the downloads were made available earlier this month, and the physical product should be shipped at the end of this month. I listened to it for the first time, with some trepidation, hoping that the wait was going to be worth it. And I haven't stopped listening to it! I would recommend any of you out there who didn't get this on KS, go get it now as it is the best version of the story to date, beating all the films and Jeff's musical effort. Here's the link... Coming of the Martians
We all know the story, which has only been changed in a few places, but not to the detriment of the story. So I will whet your appetite with some thoughts... Relive HMS Thunderchild's valiant fight from the bridge of the ship. Recoil in horror at the sounds of the curate being taken from the pit. Follow the narrator's shocking descent towards insanity as he witnesses the invasion. And the sounds of the Martians are the best I've heard - the call of the tripods is better than the Tom Cruise film, and the hooting when they are feeding is just scary. If you consider yourself a fan of the original novel, you have to have this!

Downloaded today and enjoyed voice acting and sound effects. I hope the BBC miniseries will be half as good!

So, having backed the original Kickstarter for this, I know that Sherwood Sound had talked to Jeff Wayne about it (as JW held the European copyright at the time). From what I gather Jeff was keen to work with them, but wanted to do "Jeff Wayne's audio drama of Jeff Wayne's Musical version of HG Wells' The War of the Worlds"! When Sherwood Sound said no, it was going to be a true to the book version, Jeff then flexed his copyright muscle... hence the long wait for the Kickstarter. So, for Xmas my Daughter bought me a month's subscription to Audible, and I downloaded the new JW audio drama (strange how that has appeared). And having listened to it, it only reinforces how good Coming of the Martians is. The JW version is nice from the point of view it has the music, but it is not as good as the original 70's album. And to me, it feels like JW is still milking the original idea as far as he can. Strangely enough, hot on the heals of that comes this... The Immersive Experience

I ordered the Collector's Edition. I think the studio maybe shipping them based on the website info. But I suppose the flat rate shipping fee of three pounds that I paid means a more leisurely trip from England to Kansas.
