So I want to make more trenches and fortifications. I have made a start on a Field Gun emplacement that should fit in with the resin ones I have from the kickstarter

I've been thinking about trenches lately, as I have both the AD ones, some from Acheson, and a few other odds and ends. I noted that Old Glory is also planning to produce some WW1 buildings and a trench system. I also own all of Scotts excellant Paperterrain system of trench and pillboxes/fieldworks. For the moment, I'm talking purely on the 'hardware' (vs paperware) stuff. Up till now I've used the AD system for more substantial locations and the Acheson as a one-sided (no back) system for 'hasty' positions (like overnite thrownup). But, if I were to design my own, I think I definately would not try to dupe the AD or Acheson ones. As I tend to 'play' lots of different fronts and theatres, I want to scratch build trenches that 1/reflect the area they're in (paint job mostly) 2/have some 100mm x 40mm sections (for full size infantry and machinegun squads 3/be backed by artillery firepits that will hold tanks and up to heavy field guns (6" howitzers etc.). I've watched with amazement at the skill some of you all put these together. Currently I'm thinking the following materials: popcycle sticks both small and large; wood dowels of the appropriate size for posts; modelers clay in various colors to be the 'dirt'; tools to work these, including strong cutters to quickly shape the popcycle sticks; small rounded toothpicks for stakes; some 'barbed wire' which I already have from a vendor; some cups and other 'pillbox' shaped items for gun bunkers; and a review of the various techniques you've all proved on this forum. I'll venture forth with these at some point - unfortunately for now there is waaaayyyy tooooo much painting to be done. You only need look at my various TO&Es and OOBs to see what I mean! Thank you all for the inspiration. This will happen someday.

I have an order of Ironclad Miniatures 20mm trenches and field emplacements inbound that should arrive this week and will post a review and photos. They're 30mm wide, so there's room for figures with bayonets, and 14mm deep, so about shoulder high versus waist high for FoW and other 15mm trenches which are usually only 10mm deep. The only issue with the IM trench system is that the angled connecting sections won't hold standard infantry bases. Troops based to skirmish would probably fit (of course you don't need to buy those pieces).

I got their 15mm trench system and was satisfied with workmanship and will make do with the size - in retrospect the 20mm would have been a better choice I think overall, but, I don't usually base stands on the full 100mm length, using some 40x20 & 20x20 singles for most squads and machinegun elements.

I did the same thing you did a few months back. I,ll have to post pics later. I did mine almost exactly same way, but instead of Popsicle sticks I used coffee stirring sticks. What I did was split the sticks so the lumber looks more random. I then glued like you did. After they dried, I stained the wood etc then used Woodland Scenic soil and ballast for the dirt. I made about 8' of various sizes for all types of configurations. Point is here...it was fun...make your own, just be patient and you.ll be surprised how good they come out. Pretty much everyone paints their figs to decent standards...just follow that same passion with your terrains!

Like the colors. Could you place an infantry stand in there for a sense of perspective?
