My friend with the 3d printer has been test printing some 1/00 scale WWII armour this week from programs available on line; the track detail has been excellent. He's close to being able to print his own track designs and we plan to finalize a design fro replacment tracks for BEF tanks and troop carriers next month. Once I have printed versions of the left and right tracks I can make a few silicone molds of each and start producing them in resin. I'll need more than 30 pairs to equip my BEF tracked vehicles.

My friend's 3D printer broke down in March and has just been repaired. After today's wargame (pirates) we finalized the design option for the tracks and will base them on the WWII Churchill. The odd forward sloping rear fender on the BEF tanks and carriers will be removed to allow a longer and more realistic looking length of track in contact with the ground. I'll provide drawings and dimensions but will make side armour plates from styrene to be incorporated into the design, and provide a 1/100 Churchill for the track design to be duplicated.

I am considering getting a 3D printer as they are now available for US$ 160.00
The idea of printing tracks or track links is very appealing. Even at 1:100 scale, it is still possible to make individual track links. Even easier for land ironclads.

I don't even like individual link tracks for 1/35. Way too fiddly for little gain in appearance. At 1/100, you'll go blind.

I've no opinion at all on this matter (!!! Omg!). I'm pressed enough just trying to get things assembled and painted to worry on track size. I wonder why all the fuss about it - someone enlighten me on the need to swap out tracks on the BEF please.

My new 3D printer arrived yesterday. Sadly, the Filament I bought with it did not.

I've no opinion at all on this matter (!!! Omg!). I'm pressed enough just trying to get things assembled and painted to worry on track size. I wonder why all the fuss about it - someone enlighten me on the need to swap out tracks on the BEF please. I think the BEF tracks look silly. Compared to the mass of the tank/carrier they are far too narrow and have a very small length of track in contact with the ground, having only 3 sets of bogie wheels. The metal side skirts are noticeably shorter than the fenders they are supposed to be glued to, and track detail is sparse. The 4-bogie tracks on the BEF tanks in the rulebook were less toy-like in appearance and would have been acceptable; I have no idea why Ernie and crew changed the track design to 3 bogies. Since my post on April 28 I've done nothing to get the tracks printed. In my spare time I've been dealing with the aftermath of the worst spring flood in recorded history in the neighbouring province of New Brunswick, repairing substantial damage to our cottage. The 3 major buildings were on artificial mounds of crushed rock well above maximum previous recorded flood level (1973), but this flood was 2-3' higher and all buildings were flooded and damaged by waves. I did spend a couple of hours last night assembling Cardigan Carriers and BEF tanks, without their tracks, and test fitting printed 1/100 scale Panzer Mk IV tracks to see if the design could be modified to fit. My friend printed a few Panzer IVs for me and made some spare tracks with schurzen. By tweaking that design (adding 2 more bogie wheels to make them longer, making the track assembly a few mm higher, widening the tracks 1.5mm, and modifying the schurzen plates) I think they'll work as well as a Churchill type track design, which he hasn't found to download to the printer yet.

Sorry to hear about all the flooding - being a bit away from the Ellicott City disaster, I hope that you can recover in a short time. Thanks for the info in spite of it all & may the rain demons be banished from you & yours.
