I agree with hardlec. Fortify the southeastern coast. I think the "Red Center" is going to be something like Mad Max meets the War of the Worlds.

All of the above depends on how fast the Martians advance after the initial landings. I suspect that the Port Phillip Bay/Melbourne line is the better defensive position. With that bays naval support and shipping capacity, Aussies would be able to hold the passes (if any) thru the mountain line to the north. I do think this would be the more rational solution, were Australia to hold out in the 'new printing'. Between the navy and S2G arms, we'd have a corner of Australia to add to our battlefields of humanity.

They can take our red centre, but they can never take our BEER!
...or the sports, we love our sports
As much as I refuse to want those southerners down there to be the stronghold for Australia, I must agree that you are probably right, it does offer the best location for setting the Australian defence.

Yeah, I'm currently trying to find a local channel that covers Aussie Rule Football. I was a big fan and even have gone to a local team match (the Wash/Balt Eagles - I think the Black Cats sponsor them). I also enjoy the rugby teams, which are carried locally Yeap Beer and Sports

Ale, Larger or Stout, beer is an excellent aid in opposing Martians.

When my wife and I were attending Melbourne Uni we would would meet at the Prince Alfred after classes for a pint of Geelong Bitter. Best beer I ever had. Vic Bitter was my second favorite. Can't get anything like it here in the States.

Okay, Australia was the only country with compulsary military training beforee WW1. Australia actually built (but didnt field) tanks in WW1. There was an already established military industry in Melbourne and Sydney. The fact we were seperate states in 1901 is actually an advantage. We had a very established and extensive train network. In addition to The Great Dividing Range there is also the Murray River upon which both NSW and Victoria had coastal gunships to stop smuggling. Blow the bridges on the Murray and other major rivers and the Martians would have an extremely hard time getting any where near our main cities. They would control the red centre and most of the inland, but not the coast. We were also a major mining centre as well as agriculture. The great distances mean the Royal and Australian navies could get to many fights, even some of the river fights.

So an AQMF Australia could have a limited number of British tanks? Sounds good.

Thanks vonhist. There is nothing as good as an assessment by someone who lives there and has the background on a place. Maps don't alway convey the true nature of the terrain.

If a motorcycle with a chain can trip a tripod, the undercurrents and massive roots etc on the floor would make walking across the Murray and many other Australian rivers impassable.

Welcome to the forum ! Thank you for the update on geography and idea of the Aussies surviving the onslaught. Sounds like IG might want to reconsider the rule books fate of Australia. Looks like another front might open up in 2nd edition

Agree wholehearedly, mad!! Any country (or power) that has engaged Aussies as opponents in a fight discovered that it is a BAD idea. I want them on my side of the room when somebody turns out the lights and starts shooting!

Okay.
The fighting spirit of Australia is not subject to question, unless you want to be drop bear food.
It would appear that Australian industry can produce Monotanks, Specter and Defiant armored cars, and possibly coil guns. I am not sure about the bigger British tanks, or more precisely, being able to produce them in sufficient numbers. What would Australia produce that would carry a 2-lb coil gun, or even a 4-lb coil gun?
Of course, in the Outback, the Steampunk version of Mad Max rules the day. I'd rather deal with drop bears.

My thoughts on this would be around the idea of ww2 portee. You get a truck or tractor and strap a big .... Cannon to it. At this time in history, vehicles were not a huge thing in Australia, but it depends how far off the historical truth you want to go... Was Australia attacked in the first invasion, if so would this have changed the technology of the country? Aussies were known to use captured enemy equipment when it was available, even risking lives to scavenge items that were in dangerous locations. Perhaps they have begun to use the Martian tech? Strap a Martian gun on a truck and start slapping down those walkers! I can't remember where I red it but Aussie troops weren't to impressed with tanks and preferred not to use them, and I understand that this isn't the first ww, but I like the idea that potentially the war in Oz has evolved into something different to other countries. Guerilla warfare with a whole new range of Martians, maybe more of an air- ground war?
