I see the faint outline of a Martian in the hatch. Run Ogelsby!

Until now I didn't notice that the cylinder has curved bits on the sides of the casting. They don't look like they should be part of a projectile that's slammed into the ground. Any idea what they're supposed to represent?

They do look like two halves of an outer lid that has been opened. Perhaps an external heat shield for the rear entrance. There seem to be two "hinges" suggested on the rear rim of the main cylinder and there appear to be matching hinge pins molded on the edges of the lid halves.
It looks like they intended for the halves to open and then fall away. This is different from Wells' unscrewing rear end of the projectile, but is easier to produce.

So not the lid described by Well's that was unscrewed from within and toppled off. Looks like a design change since the first invasion!

Yep--sure looks like it to me. Maybe intended to open quicker. Instead of slowly unscrewing, just hit a button and they pop open like some missile launchers.
Also, FWIW, Wells' cylinders did not have the side mounted hatch. Only the end of the cylinder provided the opening.

They look like two leaves of a hatch over the end of the cylinder that either broke away from their hinges or are supposed to drop away.

I did some dry brushing with rust on the cylinder then discovered I am out of the ink for the next step. So a short delay while I order more ink. Here is the rust added.

It seems the second generation of Martian cylinders are much better than the 1894 editions. They look like tough obstacles. I'll have to add one to my Martian Legions.

Good job on the paint! Very nice effect. It really looks like it was heated and boiled away part of the exterior surface.
