Well, I've started a new project! I'm going to build the sort of cavalry squadron commanded by Frank Dolfen in Book 3 of my Great Martian War series (warning, spoilers!)
Realizing the futility of matching pure horse cavalry against Martian tripods, the Army is deploying new hybrid mechanized cavalry units. In game terms:
Troop A will have four 6-figure horse cavalry units.
Troop B will have four 6-figure motorcycle units
Troop C will have 10 armored cars
Troop C will have three machine guns and three mortars all transported on pack horses.
I already have all the motorcycles finished. I'm starting to paint the horse cavalry now. I will have dismounted versions and horse holders as well as the mounted troopers.
I'm still debating what to use for the armored cars. I don't like the 4-wheeled armored jalopies from the official line, so I'm looking around for a good substitute. I REALLY want an 8-wheeled monstrosity based on the Reeves 'OctoAuto' that really existed in that time period. May have to kit-bash something.
I will post some pics as I get farther along.

I like your cavalry squadron idea Scott. OctoAutos for the ACs would look great but no one makes the model in HO scale to my knowledge.

Well, for my armored cars I've decided to try modifying some German SDKFZ 231s. They already have 8 wheels. I'm thinking I will make the rear the front and turn the turrets around backwards. I'll add some bits and pieces to disguise them a bit and they should look good.

Good deal. You will find that the 231's were equipped to operate either end "forward." They had steering wheels and driving controls for operation either way.

Yes, I had read that! I'm not going to bother to put steering wheels on them, however I am going to see about shifting the middle wheels toward the front and back a little so they are not evenly spaced and are more grouped in pairs the way they were on the OctoAuto. Not sure that will be possible with the model, but we shall see.

Oh, the things we do for our hobby! Last night I made a bunch of teeny, TINY, little dynamite bombs (with fuses!) for my cavalry figures!

You are making my eyes hurt at the thought of it!

A shame the Army didn't breed olive drab horses. It would make painting these figures SO much simpler!

Scott,
Would not 6 figures on a single stand be a fairly large base?
Each stand represents a platoon?

No, they will be mounted like the motorcycles. Two figures on a base (element) and three bases to a unit. So each unit is a squad, four squads make a troop and four troops make a squadron.

Ok. What miniatures are you using for horse cavalry?

Might I suggest some Garford Putilovs. I got mine from shapeways.

Why not make a paper model?

Dang it I wish Old Glory would get off their hands and do all those projected figures for WW1 they have scheduled - to include the Lancaster and Austin armored cars. The list of new stuff was first on their catalog in summer of 2015. I suspect (hope) maybe this summer at Histoicon they'll be released.
They'd be a nice mix for you AC recon above.
